PROFILE :
BASIC INFORMATION
Smokey is an intact male mixed Labrador who was given to his owner since a puppy. He was brought into our care center because his owner was kicked out of her home and is currently living in a shelter; she isn’t able to continue care for him. He currently irritates his tail which tends to bleed at times and he recently started using the bathroom every 2 hrs.
SOCIALIZATION
Around strangers Smokey is shy and fearful; he has to warm up to them. Once he warms up he plays gently with adults and wants all attention. He has lived with children from ages 5 and up, around children he is relaxed, playful and gentle. Smokey has lived with his father who is the same breed as him and the behavior was the same. No history of biting another animal or person.
BEHAVIORAL
Smokey sometimes pees in the house; only when he isn’t take out within an allotted time. During storms he tends to hide and cuddle up next to who is near. When his bowl is touched by his owner he isn’t bothered; when a stranger touches it he growls. When he is playing with a toy and it’s taken away he will growl and take it back. He isn’t bothered when time for a bath. He enjoys having his coat brushed and being held or restrained. When unfamiliar people approach the home he barks.
FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW
Smokey will do well in a big family. He is described as being playful and affectionate. He is mainly indoors and his activity level is high. His favorite activities are playing fetch. When home he tends to follow his owner around. His favorite toys are balls, stuffed, and squeaky. Smokey is house trained and rarely has accidents. Well behaved when alone. In the yard he barks. He knows commands as sit, down, shake/paw and hug. For exercise he slow walks on the leash or run. He at times pulls very hard on leash. When he is off the wanders off but will come when you call his name. He uses the potty on cement or grass. Eats dry Pedigree.
BEHAVIOR :
Smokey came to us as an owner surrender on 12/10/15. It was reported by the owner that Smokey is shy and fearful around strangers and needs some time to warm up to them. Though once he has warmed up he plays gently with adults and wants all attention. He has lived with children from ages 5 and up, around children he is relaxed, playful and gentle. The owner stated that if Smokey’s food or toy is touched or taken by a stranger he will growl. Smokey was a bit shy when entering the behavior room, but was interested in interacting with the assessor and had soft body language. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. Multiple times during the assessment Smokey came and rested his head on the assessor’s lap. He did become very uncomfortable during the squeeze and flank attempts maintaining very stiff body language. He showed no interest in the toy or rawhide items on this portion of the assessment. The behavior department believes that Smokey would do best in and experienced home with no children.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has soft body language, but is a bit fearful. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, low and a bit fearful.

Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff
Flank squeeze 2: 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff

Group Behavior:
When off leash with other dogs, Smokey is a bit nervous but greets the other dog politely. He seems sexually motivated but does not actually try to mount.
