07/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: With his big smile, sparkling eyes, wagging tail and wrinkled forehead, Smokey had me at ‘hello’. He’s a gorgeous ‘hunk’ in a well groomed tan coat, his weight perfect for his size, and his friendly, easy personality a pleasure to spend time with. His leash manners are perfect making for an easy walk to the park, and he’s likely housetrained ‘going’ the moment we were out the door. Wagging his tail at all the dogs we passed, in the back yard he play bows to a dog in an adjoining pen. He’d love a play date! He has the most expressive face, posing for pictures like a pro, tossing around a plush toy amusing himself, and then running back over to wag his tail and bow at the dog next door. Drinking some water from the hose he cooled himself down for some more playtime and cuddles. Smokey’s gorgeous coloring tapers off into a dark muzzle with a little ‘eyebrow’ over each eye. He’s gorgeous, fun, sweet and affectionate; the only thing missing from his life is a person to spend it with. Ask to meet him today.
07/17/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Smokey came to us as a stray on 7/15/15. Upon intake it was reported that Smokey had loose and wiggly body language and allowed all handling. He was very interested in exploring his surroundings when entering the behavior room. Smokey allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items, while maintaining soft body language. He proved a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. He showed some concerning behavior when taking away to the toy and rawhide items on this portion of the assessment but did not escalate. The behavior department believes that Smokey can go to an experienced home with no children, and we recommend teaching Smokes “drop-it and trade-up games”. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral.
