09/02/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: From the tip of his Bulldog-y muzzle to his chunky wigglebutt, hunky Smash (or Smushie as I like to call him!) is one handsome dude. Whether wearing his best pouty puppy face as he waits patiently for a treat or grinning ear-to-ear while we explore the neighborhood, it’s hard not to smile right along with him and everyone we pass has some goofy comment to make about my gorgeous date. Smash seems to like other dogs and walks by their cages with ease and as we near a transport van in the parking lot he makes me laugh by getting right up close to a photo of a big black Pittie printed on its side and greeting his new friend like it was a real dog! Though he does pull on leash at first, once in a harness Smash is a great companion for a stroll to the park and he appears to be quite house trained too, keeping a tidy den and taking care of all his business almost immediately once we step out the door. He’s energetic but listens well when I offer correction, always sits on command and seems to enjoy petting, though he’s more of an adventurer than a snuggler at heart. Now that he’s passed his behavior evaluation with impressive ‘scores’ on everything from handling to resource sharing, Smash is ready to make a fresh start in a new home and he’d love to share his happy-go-lucky personality and smushy good looks with an experienced forever family who’ll appreciate him for the funny, unique and playful pet he longs to be.
08/31/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Smash came into our center after a report he bit the owner’s mother in the hand. No other details were given. Smash allowed all handling during intake with soft, wiggly body and would roll over on back to expose belly for petting. Smash pulled on leash during his relief walk. He had very high energy, open mouth panting in the SAFER assessment room. Smash allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, pulled out with quick movement at end of item. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, open mouth, tail wagging. Smash was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, but approached assessor at end with coaxing. He shoulder rubbed while getting into position for Squeeze. Smash did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He allowed Food bowl to be moved, but gulped Food faster on 1st cheek pass, lifting head easily when hand was applied to cheek on second pass. Smash was playful with Toy, keeping a firm grip and loose, wiggly body. He relinquished the toy for Rawhide. Smash took Rawhide away when approached by assess-a-hand, body neutral. Smash approached the helper dog with ears forward, tail above spine level, body relaxed. The Behavior Team feels Smash would do well with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. He may also benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, body soft, pulls out quickly at end of item. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 2. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites on 1st cheek pass, body not stiff. He lifts head when hand is applied to cheek on second pass. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, body neutral. No growling or stiffness. dog-dog:2 approaches, body soft, tail above spine level
