08/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A1046608 Skipper came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have any information on his past behaviors in a home. At intake it was reported that Skipper was nervous, but became social and playful when offered food and water. During SAFER Skipper became uncomfortable with sudden movements and handling around his head and neck, but with a slow approach he allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue. Skipper also became uncomfortable during the tag interaction, quickly turning towards the touch, and had a low body position. During the resources portion of the assessment Skipper snapped at the assess-a-hand when pushed out of the food bowl, but was not interested in the toys or rawhides. During the dog-dog interaction Skipper approached the helper dog with soft body language, and appeared to be playful. Due to the concerns displayed during the food item, the department recommends placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks. Tag 3 . Dog repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit, Dog is crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 5. Dog snaps at assess-a-hand. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper dog in play position. His mouth is open.
