12/05/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The son of Mufasa in the famed Disney The Lion King, Mufasa tells Simba: ” Look inside yourself, Simba. You are more than what you have become.” What our Simba has become is a gorgeous dog in need of a new family to take care of. When his people left him with us as they are moving someplace he’s not welcome, they told us ” he’s friendly and loves kids”. We’re also told he’s housetrained, likes to play with all toys, likes to play fetch, doesn’t mind being given a bath, has a low activity level, and knows ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘give paw’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, ‘speak’ and ‘stop’, and is well behaved when left alone at home, and is relaxed and playful with other dogs. Simba was waiting patiently in his kennel for a walk and pottied the moment we were outside. He pulls hard on the leash so will benefit from a harness and/or some leash training, and we head into the backyard for off leash time. Simba has been fabulously taken care of; his weight is perfect for his size and his coat is clean and groomed. His tail wags gently all the time, and he leans into me for petting starting to close his eyes as he relaxes into me. He enjoyed playing with a plush toy happy when I tossed it to him to pounce. Simba is doing the best he can without his family but it’s clear he misses them. He needs a new family to love and relax with, and is hoping they’ll find him today.
12/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Simba pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. Simba was distracted, focused on objects in the room but at the end of the game he played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction and was a bit difficult to distract him. Simba took the toy away but had soft body language. Simba was surrendered to us. His previous owner described him as playful, confident, excitable, affectionate, mellow, and friendly. Around children of all ages Simba is relaxed and plays gently. Around other dogs Simba is relaxed and playful and plays gently. Simba has never been around any cats so it is unknown how he will react to them. Simba is friendly whenever someone touches his food or bowl while he is eating. Simba is also friendly whenever someone tries to take a treat or toy away”. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Simba appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. When Simba becomes aroused he is slow to de-escalate and sometimes requires intervention to help redirect him to more appropriate behaviors. We also recommend a home without children. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
12/01/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When offered handler correction Simba quickly becomes aroused. He makes eye contact, stiffens, hard barks and slowly walks toward the handler. Due to safety concerns and his potential to escalate, Simba is no longer a candidate for off leash socialization. When off leash with other dogs, Simba briefly greets, but mostly attempts to mount. 12/3 update: Simba does briefly attempt to mount but once offered correction he relents and explores the yard. 12/4 update: Simba attempts to mount the helper dog and may get frustrated when corrected–stiffening and growling.
