A volunteer writes: Looking up at me with a smile and a tail wag I leash Sherman easily and he gingerly steps out of his kennel. As we walk to the elevator Sherman stops in his tracks and I can hear him say: ‘STOP, HALT, NO WAY am I going into that box with the moving floor you humans call an elevator. Stairs for me please, thank you!’ We head for the stairs, Sherman wagging his tail; once downstairs he stops again to survey the area before walking further. Once assured it’s all good we’re out the door. Sherm goes potty immediately so is likely housetrained, and off we go to the park. He’s great on leash, checks up often as we walk, and ignores other dogs we pass. He’s stunningly gorgeous, a good weight for his size, and his coat is clean and shiny. Off leash in the pen he loves to play fetch, bringing the ball right back to me and letting me take it right out of his mouth or dropping it at my feet. He has such a soft mouth, I’m amazed! When I sat down to take some notes Sherm sat beside me, putting his head in my lap for some petting, and then lay down at my feet. Two old friends, sitting together, each doing our own thing but completely in tune. In group Sherm greets the helper dog but at the time was more interested in exploring the pen than he was in interacting. He’s an absolutely rock star dog waiting to meet his rock star new person. Is it you? Ask to meet him today!
07/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sherman came into our center with two other dogs on 6/30/2015. He was very fearful on the elevator to go outside for his relief walk, needing to be carried, he had no problem going back into kennel by walking up the stairs. Sherman was cautious upon entering the SAFER assessment room, but allowed collaring. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. Sherman stood still and accepted the touch for Sensitivity item, body soft, mouth closed. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit nervous, body a bit low, settling easily at the end. Sherman did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He required a lot of pressure to lift his cheek out of the Food dish. Sherman had no interest in Toy and minimal interest in Rawhide. He is tolerant of other dogs in playgroup, but was more interested in exploring his surroundings. Due to his nervous fearfulness and his potential for possible possessiveness with Food, the Behavior Team feels Sherman would do best in an Experienced home. He may do best in a calm, quiet, structured environment so he can know what to expect and relax in his new home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is a bit stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Sherman greets and allows greeting from the helper dog but is more interested in exploring his surroundings.
