05/04/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Shera was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Shera was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction. She ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. Shera had minimal interest in the toy and took the rawhide away; body language was a bit stiff. Shera came to the care center as a stray and had loose body language and a wagging tail upon intake and allowed for all handling. During the assessment, Shera allowed for all handling to be completed with ease, however, she did show some potential to guard food and possibly rawhide. The Behavior Department believes Shera would do best in an experienced home with no young children that can manage and positively modify any guarding behaviors if they manifest in the home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is neutral, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. She lifts head with ample pressure when hand is applied to cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is a bit stiff. No growling. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Shera will politely greet another dog and is tolerant when greeted. She does not engage with another dog past the initial greeting
