A volunteer writes: Try as I might I couldn’t get Shay to crack a smile during our photo shoot so you’ll just have to trust me when I say that behind her sad, serious expression lies the spirit of a playful, snuggly and joyful puppy! Shay is a shoo-in for the title of Miss Congeniality as she greets doggie pals with plenty of butt wiggles and tail wags and her lucky human friends are smothered in lap cuddles and kisses galore. She’s so sociable and easy to handle, coming when called and taking treats nicely, chasing but not guarding her ball and never showing anything but love love love for everyone she meets. Though Shay does like to follow her nose when on leash, she responds well to correction and seems to be quite house trained too, taking care of all her business promptly once we hit the street. Past the hyperactivity of puppyhood but still very playful and open-hearted, Shay is the perfect age for starting a new life with a new forever family and she’s all ready, set and eagerly awaiting her chance to go home with you today! Another volunteer writes: Ask Shay what her favorite thing to do is, and she will tell you that she loves to cuddle! And she’s good at it! Giving me a gentle stand up hug, she leans in close and sweetly gives me a kiss. In play with another dog she was happier cuddling with her person than interacting with the other dog. She likes dogs, but is all about her person and lots of love and snuggles. She’s gorgeous, easy, and an absolute delight. If you’re a cuddler then Shay is the girl you want beside you. Meet her today.
04/14/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Shay pulled a bit on the leash when out on her relief walk. She was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, licked hands and face. At the start of the assessment Shay allowed the Assessor to loosely cup her head in her hands, however, as the tactical handling items progressed, Shay became noticeably less comfortable with close handling. At first Shay followed at the end of the leash during Tag but as the game progressed she became more playful and jumped up on the Assessor toward the end of the game. When the food bowl was moved she ate faster, was a bit stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. She was minimally interested in toys and allowed it to be easily relinquished to the Assessor and had no interest in rawhide. Shay came to the care center as a stray. While the Assessor was attempting to position her for Squeeze, Shay froze and continued to give whale eye for the remained of the close handling portion of the assessment. While she never escalated past the freeze, the Behavior Department believes Shay would do best in an experienced home with no children that will allow her to warm up to handling at her own pace. She also showed some potential to guard food and we would recommend an adopter who could safely manage and positively modify this behavior if it manifests in the home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is low, body a bit stiff, mouth closed, ears forward, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, but does begin to play toward the end of the game. Jumps up on Assessor when the game is ending. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Food 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. She does lift head with moderate pressure when hand is applied to cheek. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away allowing toy to be easily relinquished to the Assessor. Rawhide 1. No interest.
