A volunteer writes:
Shay was brought to us with 3 of her friends and a host of puppies (that could be hers) as a fire devastated her home. She was coughing upon arrival and needed oxygen for smoke inhalation. She is a young, healthy and stocky girl who has been beautifully cared for. She has been a mother not that long ago. Her coat is gorgeous, mocha and cream , her weight perfect and she is the picture of health. Shay is very friendly and welcomes visitors with a wagging tail and an engaging demeanor. She is leashed in a second and walks beautifully to the yard where she eliminates pretty soon. She comes when called and sits at once on command and for treats. She seems used and likes the human contact and comes on the lap for caresses and kisses. She does not appear shy but rather confident in her ways, which is very nice to see after the ordeal she went through. Shay is not only gorgeous but also sociable and friendly. She seems to have been her owner’s “special girl.” Shay is right now at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting and hoping to be home and loved again.
Meet Shay, one of MACC’s “Disaster Dogs”! Beautiful Shay, her man Lex A1031521, and their 6 puppies came to the care center after surviving a fire! The puppies have all found placement Shay and Lex (at risk tonight) still need a home. Please pull Shay from MACC!!

Behavior:
Shay walks calmly on leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Shay was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. She was not interested in toys or rawhide. Shay was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful.
Shay did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to push her out.
Toy 1. No interest.
Rawhide 1. No interest.
Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful.
