03/25/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Shay will not compete on the runway. She is no beauty but a simple brown dog let go by her family. Although well nourished, her care has not been the best and she got a cold pretty quickly. Shay is friendly in her kennel. She is excited to go out and have a friend. She eliminates as soon as we reach the yard. We play a little in the sun after a meal that Shay clearly enjoys. She likes to be caressed and to have her eyes cleaned. She poses her head in my lap and just idles there for more hugs and kisses. Shay seems to like other dogs, wiggling her body and wagging her tail at their sight. She gets excited at the sight of a ball but clearly is too tired to jump and run…Shay is a good girl, low key, well mannered and loving. This is your chance to adopt a good dog, a faithful friend, a lifelong loving companion. Shay needs you..Come and meet her tomorrow at the Manhattan Care Center.
03/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Shay came to our center as a stray inside a building. She walks slowly and a little stiffly, she was very calm and relaxed during her relief walk. Shay allowed all tactile handling during the SAFER assessment. She stood still and accepted all touch and showed no signs of aggression. She had no interest in food or rawhide, with minimal interest in toys. Shay wagged her tail and perked up when approaching the helper dog playfully. The Behavior Team feels she would do well in an Average home that understands she moves slowly and would not be very active due to her medical needs. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.. Food. No interest. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper dog in play position.
