04/07/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s tempting to write that Shakespeare is poetry in motion but he’s such a goofball he’s more like a limerick in action. What an adorable, high energy, playful guy! He appears housetrained, is mostly really great on a leash, and is so good-natured that even when a little dog came at him growling and trying to chew on his leg he just wagged his tail and kept on walking. Shakespeare will add so much fun, affection, and love to a family or individual who can match his energy-or at least take him to the dog run. What a happy life Shakespeare is about to have thanks to you….we just know it!
04/06/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Shakespeare is very high energy and hard to settle down and focus. Shakespeare did not settle in during Look item for all three attempts, instead focused on other stimuli in the room. He did allow handing for Sensitivity, body was soft and accepting of the touch. Shakespeare followed at the end of the leash during Tag, but was not engaging with the Assessor, at the end of the game grabbed the leash and did not settle. He jumped on the assessor, played tug of war with the leash, and started mounting. Shakespeare had to leave the room to reset three times before he settled down for Squeeze. He calmly sniffed Assessor’s hand and gently pulled his paw back. He was polite when eating, allowed the dish to be moved and allowed his face to be pushed out. Shakespeare kept a firm grip on the toy, but kept his body loose and wiggly. He also kept a firm grip on the rawhide, moving his body away and putting it in between the rawhide and the assessor. During playgroup, Shakespeare mounts other dogs when off leash. Due to his high energy level, the Behavior Team feels Shakespeare would do well in an Experienced home with no young children that can provide daily exercise in the form of walks, runs, playtime, etc. as well as Kongs for positive enrichment. He may also benefit from obedience class to learn leash manners and how to settle down. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy or rawhide, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
