04/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sebastian came to us as a stray on 3/31/15. Upon intake Sebastian was a bit nervous and fearful, but after a bit of coaxing and some treats he became less tense. He proved to be very interested in interacting with assessor when entering the behavior room with loose and soft body language. During the tag item, Sebastian became quickly over aroused and escalated by growling and lunging at the assessor. Due to the behavior demonstrated here the squeeze test was not conducted. He proved a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Sebastian also took both the toy and rawhide items away with stiff body language. The behavior department feels that it would be best if Sebastian went to a rescue that can provide positive behavior modification. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 5. Dog growls and lunges at the assessor. Sensitivity: Not conducted due to behavior demonstrated on tag test. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. A volunteer writes: Sebastian ended up at Brooklyn ACC after being tied to someone’s fence! I’m not sure how anyone could walk away from this boy, but I can give you many reasons to rush to him. Well, not rush – he was actually a little nervous and needed a gentle approach when he arrived, but has really blossomed. He is quite the looker – stocky, perfectly brindled, and with a face that channels a mastiff. He pulls some on the leash, but definitely not with all of his strength, and seems housebroken. Sebastian has been waggy when we’ve seen other dogs and he has done well in playgroup. He is not mouthy, but he is energetic and his enthusiasm can manifest as jumpiness. He LOVES tennis balls and with some encouragement will “sit” before I throw it, but mostly can’t contain himself! He loves to chase after them, will “throw” it for himself with his paws or fling it with his mouth, but is wiggly when I come to take it and off he goes again! Tennis balls aren’t the only thing that make him jump for joy, Sebastian is very friendly and affectionate. He’s generous with hugs, soaks up butt scratches, and seems to love the attention he is so worthy of!
