06/08/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes:Are you ready for adventure? Love spending time in the great outdoors? Enjoy discovering new sights and scents? And most importantly…Do you think squirrels have no business being anywhere but up a tree? Then say hello to Guppy, the fine-eyed, beefy-bodied, fun-loving doggie soulmate you never knew you were missing! He’s 86 glorious pounds and strong as an ox but once we get into the swing of things I can handle him alright on leash, especially as he stops frequently to check out interesting smells and take care of all his business while we walk. Guppy seems to like other dogs and he pulls to be near them with perked ears and a wagging tail but his intense focus on squirrels we meet in the park suggests he’d be best socializing only with other big boys like himself — no ‘purse pups’ please! He enjoys petting and attention but prefers to be off exploring and even my good treats are ignored in favor of sniffing the nearest tree or scanning the grounds for more squirrels or doggie pals. Returning to his den is not on the list of Guppy-approved activities and he promptly redirects his unhappiness on his leash or even the kennel door and will need further help to conquer this severe reactivity, but he’s a smart guy who combines both brawn and brains in one big, beautiful package and for an experienced person willing and able to train him, he could make a magnificent companion. Guppy isn’t one to sit on the sidelines of life, he’s a gorgeous go-getter and he’s searching for an adopter who’ll go-get out there with him…could it be you?
06/09/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Guppy walks calmly on leash. He was stiff and did not show social behavior during the assessment. He was uncomfortable with handling; he stands tall, sometimes on his tiptoes, and tries to look large. His hair was standing up along his back. He makes direct eye contact. He wrinkles his muzzle to expose his front teeth. He was growling loudly and preparing to lunge forward. We decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Guppy growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test and snapped at the assess-a-hand during the toy and rawhide test. Guppy approaches the helper dog with his tail at spine level, body not stiff and lip long. **Guppy does not want to go back into his kennel and was growling, snarling, lunging and trying to bite when the assessor tries to place him back in his kennel.** The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. Dog freezes and growls Food: 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy: 4 Dog growls and snap Rawhide: 4. Dog growls and snap. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Helper: A1038792
