A volunteer writes: I remembered Scrappy from his first stay at the Care Center so imagine my happy surprise when I was reunited not with that small, mangy puppy but this stunningly handsome boy grown to twice the size and sporting a lush, flawless coat! Of course, it’s a bittersweet meeting as I’d hoped he was home to stay, but apparently his former owners now don’t have the time to care for an energetic, growing puppy so we once again have the pleasure of Scrappy’s sweet company. Let their loss be your gain! Very playful but not hyper, Scrappy loves all toys and games and will seamlessly move from tug-o-war with a plushie to chasing after a tennis ball to thoroughly sniffing every conceivable inch of the yard with unabashed glee. When four-legged friends approach the fence he’s excited to see them and bounds over to shout hello and while he does pull toward other dogs during our walk, I have no problem handling him as we move right along without a backward glance. A very attentive student, he’ll sit on command and mouth treats gently and he already seems to be quite house trained too, taking care of all his ‘business’ quickly once we hit the street. Though not really a snuggler, Scrappy craves human attention as much as the next puppy and my petting and sweet talk are accepted with a grateful smile before he wiggles away and onto his next adventure. Scrappy is still just a exuberant youngster but in many ways he’s quite mature for his age and whether you’re looking for a fun-loving hiking buddy, a silly playmate or a chilled-out couch companion, this gorgeous guy has got you covered!
MEDICAL -CAGE EXAM: Diarrhea noted in cage, BAR, otherwise looks good, panacur x 5 d
PROFILE:
Basic Information: Scrappy is a 5 month old American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He was a gift and has been with his current owner for two months. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He became a bit over aroused during the tag interaction he did a lot of jumping up, body checking and mouthy (moderate). During the paw handling he mouths the assessor hand with a moderate pressure. Scrappy did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. RE-EXAM (6/22/15):
Diarrhea noted in cage; BAR, otherwise looks good; panacur x 5 d
BEHAVIOR—Experienced Home, No Young Children:
Scrappy came to our shelter on 6/5/2015. He pulls on leash with strong puppy enthusiasm. Scrappy was very distracted in the SAFER assessment room, displacement sniffing and jumping up, shoulder rubbing during Look item. He was very active during Sensitivity item, hard to position, but eventually sat down and allowed the handling with ears back, body soft. Scrappy became aroused quickly during Tag game, escalating and grabbing assessor’s pant leg with both front paws. He lightly mouthed pant leg with no pressure during game, and took some time to descalate at end. Scrappy pulled his paw back at first Squeeze attempt, and mouthed the assessor’s hand with no pressure during second Squeeze attempt. He calmly allowed the Food dish to be moved, and lifted his head once the assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. He played with Toy excitedly, loose wiggly body and firm grip. Scrappy kept a firm grip on Rawhide, body neutral, and needed to trade up in order to relinquish Rawhide. The Behavior Team feels that due to his size and strength, Scrappy would do best in an Experienced home with no very young children. He may also benefit from puppy obedience classes to learn basic manners, not to jump up, no mouthing, and focus. Scrappy may also benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise as well as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his high energy and puppy exuberance.
Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on the Assessor and all other stimuli available. His body is soft, panting, displaying high movement between attempts.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, and quick to arouse, grabbing assessor’s leg with both front paws.
Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek.
Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Rawhide: 2. Dog keeps a firm hold. His body is neutral. No growling or stiffness.

Basic Information:
Scrappy is a 1yr old neutered male American Staffordshire Terrier that has no past or current medical issues according to the owner.
Social Life & Personality:
Scrappy has been around children and get alongs with them fine. The issue is that he plays very rough (Mouthy) and may hurt a child unintentionally. Scrappy has also been around other dogs and can be selective on who he gets along with. Weather its a large brred dog or a small one Scrappy is selective. Scrappy has also been around cats and is aggressive towards them. Scrappy is an indoor only dog that is house broken. Scrappy is described to be playful, excitable, anxious, and friendly with a very high activity level.
Behavior Issues:
Scrappy has never bitten a person or another animal. When engaging in play Scrappy likes to be a little mouthy and this behavior can be mistaken for him biting or trying to bite. Scrappy doesn’t have any guarding issues when it comes to food, treats, and toys. These items can be given and taken away with no issues according to the owner. Scrappy take well to recieving a bath and he appears to enjoy it. The owner has never tried trimming his nails and isn’t sure how he would respond to having this done. Scrappy will allow you to brush his coat and this can be done with no problems.
For a New Family to Know:
Scrappy doesn’t know any basic commands except if you tell him to sit. He went for slow walks on a leash and this was done twice a day. He enjoys all sorts of dog toys and will play with just about anything. Scrapy has been crated and he takes well to it. He was left in the crate for up to 8 hours at times and he was fine. When in the home Scrappy is the type to be in the same room. Scrappy was brought up eating dry food and there was no specific brand the owner gave as long as it was organic.
Behavior:
Scrappy came to our center as an owner surrender citing he was too hyper and plays too rough and mouthy. He was very friendly and energetic during intake. Scrappy pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Scrappy allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. He accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, focused on other stimuli, ears and tail neutral. Scrappy was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, soft body. He mouthed assessor’s hand during both Squeeze attempts, no pressure. Scrappy followed Food dish quickly when it was moved away and required a bit of pressure to lift his head out of the Food bowl. He playfully engaged with Toy and Rawhide, kept a firm grip, loose wiggly body. Off leash with other dogs, Scrappy is a rough rowdy player and is tolerant of pushy dogs; he enjoys playing in the pool. The Behavior Team feels Scrappy would do well in an Experienced home with No Young Children. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and no mouthing as well as daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, kiddie pool play and durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct his exuberant high energy.
