A Staff member writes: Scrappy was adopted and returned twice through no fault of his own! This most recent return was because his adopter was “not ready for a pet.” Scrappy has been in BACC for the better part of five months, and we would really love to see him in the loving and committed forever home he deserves! He was great with the kids who visited his former owner, and is an excellent cuddler.
**Behavior: Experienced Home, No Children**
SAFER:
Scrappy briefly lived with adults, and the owner stated he met children on walks and was tolerant of petting. He was reported to lunge at dogs while on leash, but was said to do better with dogs off leash. He was said to have a medium activity level, and the owner described him as playful affectionate, loving, and energetic.Scrappy was very sociable towards the assessor during SAFER and was very attention seeking. He allowed the assessor to conduct all handling items without issue, and maintained a relaxed body posture. Scrappy did show some concerns during the resource items; stiffening when being pushed out of the food bowl, and would not lift his head. He only showed minimal interest in the toys, but became stiff when taking the rawhide away, holding a firm grip and would not relinquish the item. Although no guarding behaviors were seen in the previous home, Scrappy has displayed similar guarding behaviors on his past SAFER and the behavior Department feels Scrappy would be best suited for an experienced adopter with no children who is able to provide a behavior modification work if any guarding behaviors occur in the home.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Food: 4. Dog freezes Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff.Dog-dog: When approaching a pen with an off leash dog, Scrappy is tolerant and respectful with female dogs.
Group Behavior: When approaching a pen with an off leash dog, Scrappy is soft, relaxed and showed affiliative behavior. Upon entering the pen, Scrappy is status seeking and extremely assertive and exhibits some concerning behavior.
3/4 Update – Scrappy continues to be uncomfortable and unsure of a female dog’s attempts to interact. He does not show any concerning behavior at this time but recommend to continuing to try him in play group with calm, relaxed dogs.
3/9 Update – With a social helper dog who is tolerant and respectful, Scrappy does not want to enter the pen and once he does enter the pen immediately wants to leave, standing up on the gate door. He is constantly lip licking and clearly stressed so he brought back inside.
4/7 Update – Scrappy is tolerant when greeted with a wagging tail. He is not interested in interacting with other dogs.
4/9 Update – Scrappy continues to be tolerant and respectful with female dogs.

A volunteer writes: Scrappy is just one of the amazing animals here at our Brooklyn Care Center, an animal I myself would love coming home to, he’s soooooooooooooo, sooooooooo friendly and pleasant to be with. I can’t wait to walk him tonight … Every time I see him he exudes mountains of welcoming barks and licks, just like my very own rescue dog at home. There’s nothing quite like adopting a dog like Scappy, he was terrific to walk, only pulling some as we went. I’m sure, with some teachings Scrappy will exceed with the best of them. He seems to be trained in all the right ways, knowing the command “Sit” and “Stay”, and doing his business in just the right place, outside and not inside. Won’t you please make the decision to come in and meet Scrappy, his life’s future depends on it … Adoption is a heart felt experience, not equaled by another in the entire world. I know, for sure, that Scrappy would love nothing more than coming home with you today and becoming your doggie and faithful companion for the rest of his life … Do it and find out.

He had minimal interest in the toy item, and did show some concerning behavior during the rawhide test – stiffening or growling, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. When playing off leash with a female dog, Scrappy approached confidently, and when given correction by the other dog for mounting her, he growled, but was responsive to human correction. When tested with a male helper dog, Scrappy does not approach and attempts to exit the room.
