09/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Getting to know you..” is our song. With Scooby, there is more than meets the eye. He needs to be given the chance to be discovered and a wonderful dog will materialize slowly right in front of your eyes. I am so glad I did, as he was one of the best dogs I met yesterday. Scooby was stressed in his kennel and out, too, pulling, pacing, whining, jumping at every noise and move. He often sought comfort by leaning heavily against my legs or hugging my waist with his forelegs and putting his head against my chest. Hugs and kisses were what he wanted and needed. After a while spent together, Scooby relaxed and became one happy pooch enjoying with all his heart a good ball game. No guarding involved. Scooby knows that it takes two to have fun. He sits beautifully on command, bright eyes, tail wagging and waits for a ball or a treat. I so enjoy the transformation. He walks rather well on the leash and eliminates while slightly marking his territory. Scooby is a gorgeous dog, trim, healthy and wearing a perfectly groomed tiger orange brindle coat. He is quite an elegant young man whose sweet, playful and friendly personality comes to life when he is with his person . I am still to see how he behaves in playgroups with other pooches. Scooby is at the Manhattan Care Center. Do not juts pass by his kennel. Ask to meet him in person, in the yard, and you will see that he really is a very nice young boy and may be your next forever best friend…
09/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Scooby pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Scooby ate faster, was stiff and very difficult to push out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Scooby is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. Scooby may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address his possible food guarding behavior. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home.We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. He does not lift head when hand is applied to cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest.
09/01/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs, Scooby is initially a bit tense, but opens up and engages in exuberant, mouthy play. 9/2 update: Scooby engages in rough, rowdy play with playful females. He can become high energy and pushy when playing but takes correction well. 9/3 update: Scooby engages in brief bouts of rough play. He becomes uncomfortable with a pushy dog and eventually overcorrects then redirects his correction to another dog in the pen. 9/4 update: Scooby continues to engage in rough play with playful females. 9/5 update: Scooby continues to display these behaviors during playgroup.
