A volunteer writes: Sassy is a spry little lady (at 40 pounds, she is small for a pit bull terrier mix) who loves treats, sticks, banana peels, rocks, and anything else she can find to play with, even while out waking! 🙂 Sassy is very affectionate, loves to lick her people, and knows how to sit for treats. She is curious about everything around her, and seems to want to visit with other dogs and people. I think Sassy would love to be in a home with someone who likes to snuggle and receive her affections, and who has some very durable chew toys and bones for her to enjoy.

6/24/15 – SAFER – AVERAGE
Helper Dog: A1038124
Sassy previously lived with 3 adults. The owner stated she allows handling from all the humans in the household. The owner mentioned she has a very high activity level, when unfamiliar people approach Sassy is always excited and wanting to greet them with her tail wagging and her body relaxed.
It was reported Sassy had relaxed body posture, loose and wiggly with her tail wagging, and she was social towards the counselors upon intake. During SAFER Sassy came into the assessment room mouth open loose and wiggly, she was friendly and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Sassy was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Sassy was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Sassy appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels she can be suitable for a “Average” adopter.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.
Squeeze: 1. 2. Dog quickly pulls back.
Squeeze: 2. 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Licks hand.
Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek.
Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.
Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
8/18/15 – SAFER – EXPERIENCE
Sassy came to our center as an owner surrender. It is reported she lived with 3 adults and a small dog. Owner states she has a very high activity and went on 2 mile runs with owner 2-3 times per day. During intake, Sassy jumped up on counselors with loose wiggly body and wagging tail. She was easy to collar and allowed all handling. Sassy pulled slightly on leash during her relief walk, jumping up/grabbing leash for tug of war. She jumped up on assessor throughout SAFER assessment, playfully mouthing with a moderate amount of pressure. Sassy allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. She leaned in during Sensitivity item, tail wagging, ears back. During Tag game, Sassy escalated quickly, jumping up on assessor throughout game, mouthing, grabbing leash, but settled quickly once game ended and sat by assessor’s side. Sassy calmly allowed Food bowl to be moved, and lifted head once assess-a-hand was applied to her cheek. She playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip and loose body. She took Rawhide away playfully, body loose. Off leash with other dogs, Sassy seems to be more comfortable with calmer males, she becomes uncomfortable with males trying to mount her or super high energy. She can be selective and can overreact/overcorrect. She does enjoy handler interaction and seems to be more at ease with a playmate that is more low key. The Behavior Team feels Sassy would do best with an Experienced adopter with no very young children. She may benefit from obedience classes to work on self-control and body awareness in regards to jumping up and mouthing. She would also benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, as well as durable toys such as Kongs and Nylabones to positively direct her high energy and enthusiasm.

PLAYGROUP NOTES
When off leash with other dogs, Sassy engages in rough and rowdy play and is selective with other dogs. She is assertive and exhibits some intolerance towards other females.
June/ July:
Sassy has a play style rooted in prey drive. She is selective as she is uncomfortable with some dogs. She is playful with a solicitous male but maintains a stiff body throughout interaction. She greets appropriately and engages in brief bouts of running play, can be mouthy and will correct appropriately for mounting. Sassy seems to be more comfortable with calmer males, she becomes uncomfortable with males trying to mount her or are super high energy. She can be selective and can overreact/overcorrect. She does enjoy handler interaction and seems to be more at ease with a playmate that is more low key.
August:
Sassy may be forward and pushy when soliciting play. She is very tolerant and engages in rough, mouthy play with a male dog. She will respond to human correction but also may be persistent in her greeting and attempt to solicit play. Sassy is very high energy and is very eager to play.
September:
Sassy continues to be social and engage in rough, mouthy play and will often take well to correction from both dogs and handlers. Sassy is very solicitous and exuberant but will also be content with just wandering the yard. At times she may become less pushy /forward and more patient with dogs who are not interested in play. She offers appropriate corrections to sexually motivated males and often enjoys playing in the doggy pool! Sassy continues to exhibit these behaviors when socializing off leash with male and female dogs. When introduced to a puppy, sassy was very polite and engaged in gentle play.
10/1 update : Sassy continues to be tolerant and playful with both male and female dogs.
10/6 – 10/7 update : Sassy continues to solicitous to both male and female dogs.
10/8 update : Sassy often engages in rough and rowdy play.
