11/28/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ask Sasha what her favorite thing to do is and without a moment’s hesitation she’ll tell you she loves to play tug! This petite caramel delight picked up a toy in the backyard pen and promptly brought it over to me for a game. We tugged, she won, and then brought it back for another game. She’s the master of tug! So cute!!! She’s slender and nicely groomed, likely housetrained, and tail waggy friendly to every person we met on our walk. She’s clearly been nicely socialized with people and enjoys their company. Of course, if you’re into a good game of tug she’ll love you all the more! Sasha pulls hard on the leash so will benefit from some leash training and/or a harness. Other dogs we passed on the street were met with a low crouch and pull towards them, and in group, to date, she has not enjoyed the company of other dogs. Sasha shows off her ‘sit’ for a treat which she takes gently, and then brings her toy into my lap for another game of tug. If you’re looking for your one and only love, Sasha is hoping you’ll stop by to meet her. Small enough to fit into any living situation, and happy to play tug before a good snuggle, she’s waiting.
11/29/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sasha came into our center as an owner surrender citing housing issues. It is reported she has only lived with adults, so behavior around children is unknown. Owner reports Sasha becomes very nervous around other animals. Sasha pulled on leash during her relief walk. She jumped up and licked assessor’s face during Look item. Sasha leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, light tail wag. During Tag game, Sasha followed at the end of the leash, body soft, but grabbed leash to play tug of war at end of game, requiring a treat to trade up and relinquish leash. She pulled body away, tail tucked, making it unable to perform Paw Squeeze. During Flank Squeeze, Sasha had no response. Sasha kept a firm grip on Toy, playfully engaged, body neutral, requiring a treat to trade up to relinquish. She sat nicely on command for each treat offered. When off leash with other dogs Sasha greets with a stiff body, eventually beginning to whine then offering a quick growl. She remains tense when introduced but allows the helper dog to greet and sniff her. When he attempts to walk away she jumps on his back and growls; responding well to handler correction. The Behavior Team feels Sasha would do best with an Experienced owner that does not have young children. Sasha may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and continue to rehearse trade up games. She may also benefit from being the only resident dog. Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth, light wag. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, grabs and chews leash at end requiring trade up to relinquish. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw, tail tucked. Flank squeeze 1 / 2 . Dog does not respond at all. Toy 2. Dog keeps a firm hold, body neutral, requiring a trade up to relinquish. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Sasha greets with a stiff body, eventually beginning to whine then offering a quick growl. She remains tense when introduced but allows the helper dog to greet and sniff her. When he attempts to walk away she jumps on his back and growls; responding well to handler correction.
