11/27/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/27/15 09:48 BASIC INFO Sammy is a 9 month old male APBT/Am. Staff. Mix. His family got him from his previous owners whom he was living on the street with. They cannot keep him due to lack of time. SOCIALIZATION Sammy is friendly/outgoing with strangers. He lived with 2 children ages 14 and 16 and has spent a lot of time with relatives ages 0-10. Sammy is relaxed, playful, and tolerant with children. He plays somewhat rough with adults and older children but exuberantly with smaller children. He’s relaxed, playful, tolerant, and plays exuberantly with dogs he meets outside but tries to chase cats. Sammy has never bit anyone. BEHAVIOR Sammy’s family reports that he enjoys being brushed and is friendly with strangers who approach his home/family. He holds his treat/toy and play bows/runs around when someone tries to take his treat or toy. He doesn’t mind when someone takes his food, moves him off furniture, holds/restrains him, wakes him up, or bathes him in the tub. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Sammy’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, and high energy. He follows his family around. He plays chase and fetch and likes balls and bones. He lived inside and slept with his owner. He ate dry Purina puppy chow with rice and beans. He’s housetrained, doesn’t have accidents, and potties outside in dirt. He chewed on the couch while left alone at home. He does well in a crate for 10 hours while he’s home alone. He was also well-behaved while left alone in a yard with a 6′ chain link fence a few times. He knows sit and down. He went for brisk walks and pulled on his leash. Off leash, he wanders but comes when called. INTAKE Sammy had a loose, wiggly body, fast wagging tail, and open mouth during intake and handling-scan (-), petting, positioning for pictures. His pupils were dilated and his sclera’s were a little red. He often strained on his leash and panted. He jumped up on us and leaned into us while we pet him. He often grasped and mounted our legs. His ears went a little back and he looked to his side to watch us collar him, but he didn’t retreat and his tail continued wagging low-neutral and fast. Sammy went into his kennel with little encouragement.
12/04/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Someone call a cardiologist, there’s a handsome heartbreaker in the house! Smooshy Sammy is everything I love in a puppy; sweet yet mischievous, gentle but full of beans, extremely friendly with dogs and people alike and a real connoisseur of the snuggling arts. One look at his pleading face and toy-stuffed smile–not to mention that picture perfect eye patch–and I’m a goner! Sammy is a family dog used to playing with children of all ages and though he can be a bit on the jumpy side with adults and teens, he understands that little kids need a gentle touch and tailors his style accordingly. Sammy’s all about his toys and nothing makes him happier than chasing, holding and flinging around a plushie or a ball. He loves a good game of keep-away and bows and grumbles with joy when I try to grab the toy from him, yet he’ll trot over to lay his head on my lap for petting as he gently chews on his prize. He’s such a patient boy when taking treats or a toy from my fingers, no grabbing or pulling and just the softest mouth ever, I can put my whole hand inside and feel no pressure at all. Surrendered to our care when his family realized they didn’t have time to properly raise and train such an active boy, Sammy’s former owners left notes describing him as affectionate, playful, confident and excitable… yep, sounds like a typical puppy to me! We’re told Sammy loves other dogs but chases cats, always greets strangers with a smile and even enjoys being groomed and bathed. He never guards his food and is said to be both house and crate trained and I can vouch firsthand for his knowledge of ‘come’, ‘sit’ and ‘stay’, though his ‘down’ still needs a little work! Puppies aren’t for everyone and it takes stability and commitment to turn out a winner but Sammy’s already halfway there and with patient guidance from an experienced adopter, this gorgeous boy is destined to be a superstar. So grab a toy, hold onto your heart and head on in to our Manhattan Care Center today, Sammy would love to see you!
12/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sammy pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (moderate). He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. He showed a low threshold for what appears to be sexual arousal and consistently tried to mount the Assessor during the Tag and was very difficult to distract him. Sammy took the toy with a soft body language. Sammy was surrender to us. According to his previous family Sammy is friendly and outgoing with strangers. He lived with 2 children ages 14 and 16 and has spent a lot of time with relative’s ages 0-10. Sammy is relaxed, playful, and tolerant with children. He plays somewhat rough with adults and older children but exuberantly with smaller children. He’s relaxed, playful, tolerant, and plays exuberantly with dogs he meets outside but tries to chase cats. Sammy doesn’t mind when someone takes his food, toys or treats”. Sammy appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Sammy is quick to use his mouth in play and has poor body awareness, resulting in him mouthing handlers with moderate pressure. Sammy is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced no children home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. 11/29/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Sammy has displayed some playful behaviors during off leash interaction, but has mostly made attempts to persistantly mount other dogs in the pen (Sammy is currently unaltered). Former owner reports that Sammy ” plays exuberantly with dogs he meets outside”. However, his behaviors in a home with other dogs are unknown. Based on observation made while in our care, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Sammy before placement into a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs, Sammy engages in play, may have the intent to mount. 12/1: Sammy greets briefly, but is mostly sexually motivated. He is tolerant of mounting from another dog. 12/2 update: Sammy enters the yard and immediately attempts to mount the helper dog. He ceases when correction is offered and then attempts to mount the handler. He responds well to handler correction. 12/3 update: Sammy greets a male well but exbibits sexually motivated behavior during the interaction. He will continue to attempt to mount once corrected. 12/4 update: Sammy continues to attempt to mount but will engage in running play when solicited. 12/5 update: Sammy continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs.
