10/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sammy seems very much like a puppy to me! She has a coat like a retriever and I love her black tail. She solicits attention from her cage and is very wiggly. She is a little dodgy with the slip leash, but easily lured with a treat. She is very food motivated and quickly responds to “sit.” She seems housebroken, does adorable head tilts at squeaky noises, is a little skittish of scary noises, and loves to chase tennis balls. When I go to pet her she immediately play bows and starts dong the zoomies; I’m not sure if she’s worried I’m trying to catch her to go inside or if it’s an avoidance technique for being touched! She will put her paws on my lap if I’m giving her treats, but shies away a bit from touch at first. Eventually she settles and warms up to it, but I wouldn’t call her cuddly yet. The person that found her reported that she was difficult to catch, but was friendly once they did. She has a very sweet innocence about her, like she is unsure of people and would rather stay in her own playful world. But I think with time and patience, she will gladly welcome people in, and give so much in return!
10/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sammy came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Sammy was calm with loose body posture, she did allow all handling. During SAFER Sammy came into the assessment room with high energy and anxious, she was a bit social towards the assessor, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Sammy head flips and tries to bite at the assessor on the sensitivity item. During this portion of the assessment on food item she allowed her head to be pushed out of the food bowl with a bit of pressure, toy item she settled close firm, loose and wiggly and rawhide item she takes away body between the handler and the item. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 5. Dog head flips and tries to bite. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit tense. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the rawhide, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Sammy was receptive to solicits but spent most of the time avoiding the other dog and pacing.
