SAFE 04/13/15 – SAMANTHA – A0801175 – MANHATTAN, NY
Safe 4-13-2015 Manhattan
A volunteer writes: Samantha is a beefcake of a girl who’s not afraid to speak her mind. Her gift of communication, constant smile, and good nature are qualities that define “family pet”. In fact, Samantha’s former owners say that she would do best in a home with kids as she is sweet and playful with them, though may be overly exuberant at times. Here at the shelter, Samantha is always raring to go. Let me out of this cage she barks buoyantly! Once free, she easily occupies herself on a walk, perhaps channeling a bit of the hound her droopy ears and snout indicate may be part of her heritage. She is a sniffer and spends more time investigating the environment than me. Even when I offer a treat she’d rather stick her nose in the dirt! An active, healthy big girl Samantha is easy to manage on leash, seemingly housetrained, and very approachable. Off leash in the pen she continues her search work until I offer her a chance to play ball. Toss it she barks again! When I do, she bounces in the ball’s direction, grabs it for only a second, and immediately returns for another. (Samantha will need some work on the game of fetch.) As per her former owners, she also enjoys tug and squeaky toys as well, so Samantha is very easy to please. They also stated that she is “aggressive and fearful” around other dogs. When Samantha is on leash and a dog approaches from a distance, we have seen her freeze momentarily, hard bark, and then lunge forward. Though easy enough to distract, Samantha will need some work in this area. Her stress level around unfamiliar dogs is markedly out of sync with her calm, easygoing temperament at all other times. In playgroup she is uncomfortable with others, vocalizing loudly and backing away to avoid. Her former owners say that once she is familiar, with both cats and dogs, she becomes tolerant. So if you’re a fun family, looking for a fun addition to your clan, check out Samantha. Kids welcome! (How often does that happen!?)
