05/29/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes Blue and green blend into a beautiful mirage when I look into Rye’s eyes, two precious gems that steal the show and make him a most attractive dog. Rye is a tiny bit shy and wonders if he should come out of his arrival kennel. He eventually does and I marvel at his perfect grey coat with golden reflections wrapping a slender and healthy body. He walks nicely on the leash, eliminates without marking and accepts a scarf around his neck. His moves are a bit tentative at first and become smoother as he gets more familiar with me and the surroundings. Although not taking treats, he comes when called, sits on command, hops on the bench and welcomes my caresses, tail wagging , his face lit up by a lovely smile. Rye is really a gorgeous young man, friendly, may be a bit timid, we have at the Manhattan Care Center. Come and meet him soon. He might simply be the one…your new forever best friend..
05/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rye was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but would approach with some coaxing. Rye was a bit tense during some of the handling portion of the assessment, but had a soft body. He was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction. He was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had neutral body language. Rye had minimal interest in toys and no interest in the rawhide. Rye was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake, he would approach the counselors when hand was extended with a soft body. During the assessment, he was a bit nervous but allowed for all handling with no aggression. The Behavior Department believes Rye would do best in an experienced home that understands he may need time to warm up to new people and environments at his own pace and that she should be given the opportunity to interact at his own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body soft, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body neutral. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog may smell and licks, then turns away. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs Rye is social and polite with males. He can be sexually motivated with females.
