07/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A staff member writes: Rusty is social when I open his kennel, tail wagging slowly he sits up to interact. I easily put a harness on him, touching his legs and body. He comes out of the kennel nicely, and he walks a bit slowly. He mainly sniffs around while on the walk with me, but he does socialize with me briefly. He accepts touch and petting and his tail will wag. He is generally relaxed on our walk, although he does demonstrate calming signals (sniffing, lip licking) as well.
07/23/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper Dog:A0928010 Rusty came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have information on his past behaviors in a home. Upon intake Rusty was reported to be docile but a bit nervous. He was also reported to be receptive to treats and allowed all handling by a counselor. During SAFER Rusty was very attention seeking, and gently jumped up attempting to lick the assessor chin when greeting. He maintained a relaxed body posture for all handling items, and was playful during the tag interaction. During the resources portion of the assessment Rusty was easy to handle when engaged with the food and rawhides, and showed no interest in the toys. During the dog-dog interaction Rusty rushed in towards the helper dog appearing to be interested in interacting, but was not playful. Rusty appears to be sociable and has not displayed any behavioral concerns while in the care center, so the department feel Rusty can be suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog may lick hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
