BEHAVIOR:
Ruben pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. Ruben was calm and relaxed during handling. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl.
Ruben was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language.
Ruben did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away
Toy: 1. No interest.
Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide.
GROUP BEHAVIOR:
When off leash with other dogs, Ruben greets and is tolerant of solicitation from males and females. 10/23 update: Ruben is polite and respectful. He will approach other dogs to greet but does not solicit or engage in play. When solicited by a pushy female he is tolerant but will eventually offer correction.

A volunteer writes:
Is this guy gorgeous or what?!! Sporting a flawless silver suit, the hunky physique of an athlete and some adorable little nose freckles, Ruben could be the cover model on a doggie magazine! All that’s missing is a big, happy smile but Ruben is in no mood for smiling. He misses his home and his people so much and doesn’t understand why he has to stay all alone in this strange kennel with its unfamiliar scent and none of his favorite blankies. Outside he wanders around aimlessly, sniffing the air and gazing longingly through the fence and no amount of treats, toys or silliness on my part has any effect. When I call him he responds by coming closer and accepting my caresses but there’s no joy in it and his tail never wags. Ruben is as loyal as they come, his heart belongs to his family and he wants only to find them and get back to ‘real life’ again. Though he pulls a bit on leash, he’s easy enough to handle once in harness, appears to be house trained and seems to like other dogs too, greeting them all with polite manners as we pass. Gentle and soft of heart, Ruben never utters a whine of complaint throughout our photo shoot and is always calm and respectful of my space, a good boy who is simply not himself right now. Ruben needs to feel wanted again, to know that he’s part of a family who loves him and will always stand by his side. He needs to go home, will you be the one to promise him forever?
October 2015
A volunteer updates: It was about a month ago that Ruben was with us for the first time, returned to his owner at that time, and now with us again as his owner no longer can keep him. Ruben is a stunning dog, slate gray, gorgeous liquid and soulful eyes, and a quiet, almost sad demeanor. Calm, gentle, soft and gentle, Ruben walks nicely on leash looking into every parked car along the way. We know that he spent a lot of time in his former person’s car so it breaks my heart to see him looking into each. Showing off his sit, taking a treat gently and then joining me on the bench for some kisses, Ruben is so grateful for the caresses, accepting them and returning them so gently. In group he’s tolerant, greets well, and offers correction when needed. Ruben is ready for a forever home where a lifetime of love, his to you, and you to him, is the commitment. He’s a great dog who needs to find true love.
