07/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Royal came into the care center as a stray, so we do not have information on his past behaviors in a home. Royal was reported to have a previous bite incident when taking a treat from a child, but the injury was minor. Upon arrival to the care center Royal was reported to hard bark while in a crate, but once out he became relaxed and was very sociable. During SAFER Royal had a loose body posture and wagging tail when greeting the assessor, but when attempting to position him for the look item, Royal became stiff and gave a hard stare. Due to this response and safety concerns no handling items were attempted at this time. During the resources portion of the assessment Royal shows potential for possessive behaviors over the food, toys, and rawhides; stiffening and growling when the items were removed. The department recommends placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. In addition to the food behavior modification protocol it is also recommended that Royal be provided with proper leash training to address the mouthing of the leash when placed back into the kennel or when aroused. Food: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy 1: 4. Dog freezes. Rawhide: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Royal is a bit sexually motivated but is more interested in exploring his surroundings.
