04/12/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Shy Roxie is with us as her owners are moving to a place not allowing large dogs. She lived and played with other canines, is known to be friendly to children and strangers (although she would be timid at first with strangers) and would know a number of commands. She is said to be house trained. Roxie is wary at the care center. She is at the back of her arrival kennel although she accepts my leash. She walks slowly, the tail between her legs and acts submissively. She is trying very hard to be the good girl she truly is, comes when I call her, sits without me asking and looks at me with almost pleading eyes. Her face is strained into a smile…Help was on the way, though. A very dear household greeter we have at the care center, Ebony, entered the adjacent pen…Roxie came to meet her. No more tail between the legs, no more drooling…Roxie felt so much better to meet a friendly peer. She was not alone anymore… I was happy for her and hopeful that time will allow Roxie to open up more and allow her to meet a great new owner or family. Roxie is at the Manhattan Care Center. Come and meet her soon. A volunteer adds: Shy Roxie came out of her shell. Yep..many glowing comments on her walking log about how good, well mannered and friendly she is. She is such a pretty dog, so girly and attractive. She knows so well her friends and always welcomes me in her kennel. It is a pleasure to walk with her and spend time together in the yard. She kept well groomed during her stay at the care center and her spirit did not go down, on the contrary. She is just more loving than she showed at first, a very sweet and affectionate female. I am very proud of Roxie, her resilience and stable nature…Roxie will make, if given a chance, a wonderful forever best friend. Please, consider her.
03/31/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roxie walks calmly on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Roxie was shy and nervous during handling, with a fearful body language. She was very fearful and unresponsive to the touch while playing tag. Roxie was not interested in food, toys or rawhide. She was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Roxie was surrender to us, According to the owner she get along with children and strangers but need time to warm up. The owner mentioned that she is friendly around other dogs but she shows guarding issues only when another dog touches her food”. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. This dog is fearful of the shelter environment and needs time to warm up. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2.
