11/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Waiting so patiently for his walk, Roland hops out of his kennel and out we go. He’s quiet and looks worried as his person is in the hospital which is why Roland is with us. He’s been gorgeously taken care of, he’s a stunning redhead at the perfect weight, and his tail wags gently at everyone. His walk is majestic, like that of a thoroughbred horse, and when he walks around the pen he’s a pleasure to watch. Roland comes when called, puts his head in my lap for some petting, quietly wags his tail at other dogs through the fence and ignores a small dog yapping at him. Enjoying some treats which he takes softly, he’s happy for some attention and sweet talk. He makes soft eye contact, his forehead showing some “worry lines” as he tries to figure this all out. Roland has clearly enjoyed the life of a much loved pet companion and that’s what we wish for him always.
11/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roland came into our center on 11/18/2015 after his owner was hospitalized. He was friendly and allowed all handling during his initial medical exam. Roland pulled a bit on leash during his relief walk. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body relaxed, tail wag. Roland stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, mouth closed. He playfully engaged in Tag game, jumping and popping his body, settled easily at end. Roland did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times but then turning away. When off leash with other dogs, Roland rushes in and immediately attempts to mount the female greeter. He is persistant despite correction. The Behavior Team feels Roland would do best with an Average adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs several times, then turns away. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Roland rushes in and immediately attempts to mount the female greeter. He is persistant despite correction.
11/19/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Roland has mostly displayed sexually motivated behavior during off leash interaction. He is forward when greeting, and may persistantly attempt to mount. Roland may persist despite receiving correction from the other dog. Roland is currently unaltered. While he has not been introduced off-leash to a male dog, it has been observed that Roland may become focused or aroused, and begins to bark when they pass by in the yard. Based on observations made while in our care, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Roland before placement into a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs, Roland rushes in and immediately attempts to mount the female greeter. He is persistant despite correction. 11/23: Roland continues to display persistant mounting behavior. 11/24 update: Roland is sexually motivated but when correction is offered he will cease attempts to mount.
