10/01/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Roger is a cute little guy with a compact body wrapped in a golden suit and very intense almond shaped eyes. Roger is never at the back of his kennel except when he sleeps. He sits right behind his door, sometimes rubbing himself at the bars, kissing our fingers or barking at another dog passing by. He craves for our presence and although food was so important at the begining of his stay, it has become quite insignificant to him. What matters is to be with his caretakers who love him to pieces and strived to make his very long stay at the care center(as well as his numerous housemates) bearable and keep his spirit up. Indeed, Roger did not seem to have had the life of a beloved pet. He lived in an environment crowded with other dogs and most likely engaged in fortuit and/ or intentional fights under the care of his former owners. His soul bears the marks of this toxic environment and two sides can be seen in Roger’s behavior. Other dogs mean often a threat to him and the desire to overcome them. He demonstrated this tendency in a thorough evaluation at the care center and even in an accidental scuffle he had with another dog. He does have “an eye” for some females though, and last night, he made really tender eyes to a lovely gal who recently gave birth. Roger is in love with his multiple caretakers and “followers” here at the care center. He runs to them when they come to the pen’s gate, rushes in their arms when they enter the area. He sits with them on a bench, enjoying caresses, giving kisses and taking in the peace they have brought to him. These caretakers have made him feel safer, respected and loved. Roger is thankful and will take that gift with him, wherever he goes. Now has come the time to decide what to do with Roger and his housemates…This is the end of the road….Roger was damaged by uncaring people and it will take quite a bit of work to undo the harm done to him. The work has started here at the Manhattan Care Center, will you take on the task to bring Roger where he should be…He is a project, definitively not broadcasted like fighting dogs who have made the news, but worth anyway the effort started here in our backyard…Roger is putting his dreams in your hands.
09/29/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roger has been in ACC’s care since June. He has proven to be social with his human caretakers but has shown significant concern with other dogs. He has been evaluated twice: a SAFER in a June and a more thorough eval in September. He sits at the front of the kennel but does not engage when visited by the assessor. He is relaxed on leash, and distracted when wandering freely in a room. He does not seek out interaction with the assessor, though he will approach when solicited. He accepts petting and handling with a soft body, engages in play with the assessor and loses interest in the toy when the play stops. He responds appropriately to human correction. When introduced to a life-size stuffed dog, Roger rushed in, hard stared, knocked the dog over and stood over it, then grabbed the helper dog’s face and growled with a posture often seen in dogs who have been trained to fight. He held the helper dog’s muzzle and continued growling with a stiff body. He required citronella to release his grip. Roger has also been involved in a scuffle in the care center, where the other dog received multiple puncture wounds to the head, neck, shoulder, elbow, and flank. Assessment summary: Roger remained relatively calm throughout the majority of the evaluation, and did not show any concerning behaviors during the handling, sociability, guarding, and novelty tests. However, with the fake dog, Roger showed behavior that is characteristic of experienced fighting dogs. Due to this dog aggression, we believe that Roger poses significant risk to other animals and will require significant behavior modification and rehabilitation. 6/19 SAFER Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes averted, tail in neutral position, relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral.
