04/22/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Do you know that great kids book, Pete the Cat? He strolls along, singing his song…Rocky is the dog version of Pete, walking along, singing his song. This deliciously affectionate, ready-to-romp Shep mix is vocal about letting the world know what he wants, singing to the passing dogs that it is “time to play!!!!!!!” The owner who surrendered him noted that Rocky is, “friendly, active, gets along with other dogs, will hug you and knows how to give kisses,” and we must say he really is a masterful smoocher. He did wonderfully on his behavior test, is a delight in playgroup with his fellow canines, is quite nice on a leash and appears house trained, and is just waiting for his chance to sing to the world! Another volunteer writes: : If Rocky had another name I would call him HAPPY! This dog is one happy fun guy. Wagging his tail constantly on our walk, wanting to say hello to everyone. So cute walking up to everyone we passed by with a waggly body saying hi. We watch a baseball game for a minute and he whines for a moment because he wants to play too. So we go play ball in the back and he is so bouncy and playful, reminding me of Tigger from Winnie the pooh. He still has that puppy energy, and needs to be trained a little. He loves every dog he saw on our walk play bowing to all of them no matter what size.
04/20/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rocky came to our center on 4/18/2015. It is reported that he is friendly and gets along with other dogs. He walks nicely on leash but then suddenly vocalized in the yard during his relief walk. He came into the SAFER assessor room with alot of energy and very loose and wiggly. He pulled out of Look item all three attempts and would not settle. Rocky accepted touch during Sensitivity item while leaning into the assessor. He engaged in play during Tag and jumped up on the assessor playfully at the end of game. Rocky maintained a low wag of his tail during both Squeeze items while licking assessor’s hand. He lifted his head out of the food bowl easily the first pass, but needed a bit of pressure for the second pass. Rocky kept a firm grip on the toy and maintained a loose wiggly body. He was a bit stiff with rawhide and each time assess-a-hand tried to take it, he would back away with the rawhide, but never aggress. Rocky vocalized and cried when the observer left the room to get the helper dog for dog-to-dog interaction. Rocky did not approach the helper dog, he looked at the dog and then exited. The Behavior Team feels Rocky would do well in an Average home. He may benefit from obedience classes to work on his vocalizing when he is uncomfortable. He would also benefit from daily exercise in the form of walks, jogging, dog park, etc. and enrichment toys such as kongs and rawhides to positively direct his energy. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is panting for the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Dog indicates play with soft ‘popping’ of the body, Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog sniffs hand, does not pull paw back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body soft. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 2. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is a bit stiff. No growling. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns and exits.
