06/10/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Just as every piece of coal is a potential diamond, our own black Rock has a wealth of hidden treasure to share with a new family and his pricelessly playful, friendly demeanor is a gift that will keep on giving for many happy years to come. Surrendered to the Care Center when his lifelong owner moved to a state where he wasn’t welcome, Rock is super sociable and loves to play chase or fetch, to stand on my lap for snuggles (and kisses!) and to meet other dogs through the fence with friendly tail wags. We’re told he’s gently playful with children and chock full of good-natured energy and it’s clear that he’ll shine his brightest in an active home where he can enjoy all the exercise and mental stimulation he craves. Rock is said to know commands for ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘come’, and though not crate-trained he is well behaved when left home alone. Walking quite nicely on leash, he finishes up his business quickly once we hit the street and though he doesn’t always follow commands, with consistent practice and the right treat motivation he’s going to make a very diligent student. We worked together on his vocalizing over the un-thrown tennis ball (‘hush!’) and it wasn’t long before he’d tempered his loud bark to an adorably held-in whimper of impatience — clever boy, Rock! Good looks, good times and plenty of good lovin’ could be all yours when you welcome this fun-loving guy into your heart and home, ask to meet Rock today!
06/08/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rock was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, licked hands and face. Rock became a bit uncomfortable during the paw handling item; he allowed for paws to be squeezed but was a bit tense and gave the assessor whale eye. Rock became uncomfortable with the assessor moving quickly around him during tag and stood his ground, barking at assessor, he had a loose body and wagging tail but did not settle until the assessor ceased movement. Rock showed some concerning behavior during the food bowl test – stiffening and giving whale eye when the the bowl was reached for but allowed the assessor to push him out of the bowl with a bit of pressure. Rock took the toy away from the assessor but kept a loose, wiggly body. He took the rawhide away, body language was stiff and he barked when it was reached for but never growled or snapped. Rock was surrendered to the care center by his owner of 5 years due to moving. He described as playful and excitable with a very high activity level. His previous owner stated Rock is playful with children and although excited owner says he still remains gentle. While the previous owner reported that Rock is not bothered when his unbothered if someone touches his food or treats while eating, however, during the assessment Rock showed some potential to guard food and rawhide. The Behavior Department believes Rock would do best in an experienced home with no young children that could monitor and positively modify any guarding behaviors that may manifest in the home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag 3 . Dog stands his ground while not cornered and barks at the Assessor with ears back, body loose and wiggly. Squeeze 1&2: 2. Dog gently pulls back his paw, body a bit stiff, gives whale eye. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish with his tail down, body stiffens each time the assessor reaches for the bowl and lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No stiffness. Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff and he barks.
