06/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Riley is part of a trio of emaciated dogs that were found in an abandoned building. His physical condition is painful to look at, but his bony silhouette is often animated by a wagging tail. He has brindle patches over his eyes like a superhero mask. And his brown eyes, though a little sunken in, are the kind that plead, and speak. While he can be a bit timid outside on walks, he is social and affectionate. He walks slowly on leash, and may have some housetraining. While I would excuse him if he were grabby with treats, he is the farthest thing from it. He has been a little unsure around new dogs in playgroup, but clearly likes the other two dogs he was found with. When I have him off leash in the yard, he follows me around, wagging his tail when I speak to him. To my surprise, he lights up at the sight of a tennis ball and is familiar with fetch. At one point it was clear he wanted to prop his paws up on me, but doesn’t have the physical strength to do so. When I sat down on the ground, he placed his paws onto my legs, and gently licked my face. On a subsequent outing he literally buried his head into my chest. There’s no telling what Riley has subjected to at the hands of humans, but there’s no doubt that he holds no grudges – he is truly as sweet as they come.
06/03/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Riley came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. It was reported that Riley was friendly, loose and wiggly upon intake. During SAFER Riley walked well on the leash side by side next to the handler on his relief walk. He walked into the assessment room loose and wiggly; Riley was very attention seeking and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Riley was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Riley was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Riley appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels she can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, tail wag and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is down with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Food: 1. No interest. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Riley initially has a tucked tail and is tolerant when greeted. When reapproached by the greeter dog, he is a bit defensive and offers a growl.
