A volunteer writes: Now playing at our Manhattan Care Center…Rigatoni: Heart of Gold. This sweet senior’s underdog tale is just as inspiring as any ‘based on a true story’ blockbuster and staff and volunteers alike are all rooting for Rigatoni to be a smash hit this holiday season and for many years to come. Found inside a building and seemingly paralysed, he was rushed to ACC and brought into our medical bay where the news looked grim. Lethargic and unable or unwilling to move, Rigatoni was clearly in trouble but…with medication and TLC, perhaps there was hope? Day two of his recovery saw this brave boy walking again, albeit in circles, those coppery eyes shining bright with a curiosity echoed in his adorable head tilt. Everyone wanted to meet him, to hand feed him, to take him for a relief walk (Rigatoni is very house trained!) and before long he was a firm staff favorite, one of those dogs people coo at in the hallway and smile over in conversation. Though his head tilt remains, the circling walk is gone and Rigatoni meanders cheerfully down the street, sniffing here, peeing there and greeting every dog he sees with happy tail wags and a soft body. He poses for photos and enjoys butt rubs, accepts all handling like a zen master and might just be the most popular guy currently at the Care Center. No doubt about it, Rigatoni is a star. He has so much to teach us about love, acceptance and never giving up hope that tomorrow will be a brighter day and though he’ll always live on in the hearts of his fans, only you can give his epic tale of survival the happy ending it deserves.
12/01/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rigatoni walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Rigatoni had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. Rigatoni did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
