05/22/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Richie pulls a bit on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Richie was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Richie was not interested in toys or rawhide. He rushed in confidently towards the friendly dog; when close, growls and snaps. Richie shows some concern during the assessment trying to snap at the helper dog. Richie has bitten another dog in the past, and for that reason we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement behavior modification to address this behavior. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 4. Dog charges the helper dog while growling or attempting to bite. Helper: A1036550 5/26 update: Richie has a known history of killing a small dog, and his behavior toward the SAFER helper dog was also concerning. Due to this information we strongly caution that Richie not be placed into a home with other animals (dogs, cats, or other small pets) or where he may have access to other animals. We recommend a behavior modification and counterconditioning program to address this behavior, as well as safety tools (muzzle, head halter) to keep Richie and those around him safe.
