11/09/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Rich must have been quite a catch while in his prime. I envision him as a foxy looking lad with a vibrant and silky red coat, pointy ears made to hear perfectly, legs designed to bounce, an exploring nose and keen eyes. Rich is now 10 year old and with us, found as a stray. Life has not been too clement to him but I still can see the handsome dog he was. I do believe that Rich really wants to be seen as the good looking guy he was and not a weak and vulnerable soul……He is “willing and able”, trots valliantly despite a limp and likely a poor vision. He is quite hungry and trying to make up for all those days when food was scarce. Rich is indeed skin and bones and we are feeding him accordingly. He is housetrained without marking his territory and likes to sniff the premises. I think that this little man was a “King” back in the days….Rich loves treats(even the hard ones) but he does not grab them and did not mind my hand next to his food bowl. He showed some brief interest in the ball but did not pursue. He really likes the attention, caresses, a head and a butt scartch….His coat feels so soft. he squeezes tighter against my legs…Maybe, he remembers that some time ago, he was treated as a pet….Rich needs you and veterinary care too. Taking care of old chaps means work, dedication, understanding but it has its rewards…that you will find in your heart… Rich is waiting for you…at the Manhattan Care Center.
11/09/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Rich was found as a stray by a member of the public so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was calm and friendly, allowing all handling, quiet and content in his kennel. Rich allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body, ears, and tail neutral. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, mouth closed. Rich followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, settling easily at end. He gently pulled his paw back on Squeeze attempt. Rich had minimal interest in Toy. The Behavior Team feels Rich would do well with an Average adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs with interest, then turns away.
