08/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I so “feel” for Rhea..She was so lost last Thursday when she was brought to the care center ..Now, I understand why..Her owner passed away..It is tough for a middle aged gal to have known the comfort of a home and the love of a master to find herself, alone in the middle of so many people and other dogs…A kennel is an unthinkable place when she had most likely a whole apartment to roam in…Rhea is calm and quiet in her den but sitting, hopeful at her door. Her eyes are intense, dark chesnut, still clear and speaking to me very eloquently. I love older chaps and this one is really pretty and girly, a little chunky and dressed in a perfectly groomed golden and lush coat. Her master took really great care of her..Rhea is leashed easily. She walks beautifully, eliminating as soon as we leave the building. Free in a pen, Rhea shows that she lost her bearings…She does not seem to know what to do with herself. A treat wakes her up….She loves food. That was easy to guess… She even jumps for it or slowly sits to get more. I think we established a bond here….A smile appears on her face…I am definitively a friend now…Rhea is now relaxed, sits by my side, accepts caresses and comes closer and closer for hugs and kisses. She is such a sweet girl, so good looking and silky to the touch. I was told that Rhea is quite well behaved in playgroups. She would be in awe, watching calmly all the dogs playing around her. She might think of herself as a nannie keeping an eye on playful pups….I love Rhea and will make special trips to the Manhattan Care Center to spend time with her. She is a lovely Labbish female with a smile that touched my heart and I so hope that it will touch yours… Rhea is waiting to be your very loving and loyal forever best friend.

Rhea came to our center after hew owner passed away. She was anxious upon intake, pacing back and forth but allowed all handling and took treats gently from staff. Rhea walked nicely on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail low wagging. Rhea stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, panting, body soft, low wag. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. Rhea gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She calmly ceased eating and lifted her head from the Food bowl when approached by assess-a-hand, after the passes she walked away and stopped eating. Rhea had minimal interest in Toy and Rawhide.
