07/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Reggie came to our center after he was found tied to a fence. During intake, Reggie was reactive to other animals in the lobby, but allowed all handling for scanning and collaring. Reggie pulled hard during his relief walk in the yard. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body soft. Reggie leaned in during Sensitivity item, body soft, tail wagging, mouth open and panting. He was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, high energy and running. Reggie mouthed assessor’s hand lightly during both Squeeze attempts. He lifted his head out of the Food bowl when assess-a-hand was applied to his cheek. Reggie was very engaged with Toy, shaking it and ripping at it, firm grip, neutral body. He required a treat to trade up and relinquish Toy, but then stayed focused on where the Toy was located afterwards. He took Rawhide away, settling with it, body a bit stiff. Reggie approached helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, tail at spine level. Once he was unable to fully approach, he reacted with barking. Due to his potential for possessiveness with various resources, the Behavior Team feels Reggie would do best in an Experienced home with no young children. Any older children should have an in-depth interaction before considering adoption. It should be noted that Reggie responds to the commands ‘sit’ and ‘stay, which may help with his focus. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, body awareness, and socialization as well as mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily exercise and play to positively direct his high energy. He may also benefit from learning the command ‘drop it’ and trade up games. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, tail wagging. He allows head to be held loosely in hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, body soft. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but unresponsive to Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Food: 1. Calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against cheek. Toy: 2 Dog takes toy away, body neutral Rawhide: 2 Takes rawhide away, a bit stiff Dog-Dog 2 Approaches tail at spine level, not stiff
