09/19/15 00:36 Dog was extremely friendly and very energetic. Pulls on the leash, jumps on people when he has the chance, took the vaccines smoothly without any signs of aggression, just needed to be held more to calm the dog down from his high energy.

A volunteer writes: Hello new human friend, is that a tennis ball in your hand? Wait…is it two balls? All for me?!! Wow, this is so unexpected, so exciting…I don’t know what to say…How about I drop this other ball (blech, it now seems so tasteless by comparison) then sit politely while you tell me what a good boy I am and maybe after that you can throw the new ball? Not to toot my own horn but I’m quite the star when it comes to fetching; I can run like the wind and back again, hop onto the bench and happily entertain myself for hours (in dog years) by chomping, dropping, kicking and re-chomping the ball…that is, unless you’d care to throw that second tennis ball into the mix? I knew I could count on you! Now we can play my favorite game and don’t worry, the rules are simple so you don’t have to be as smart, athletic or good looking as me to keep up. Just throw one ball, wait for me to return to the bench with it then raise up the other ball and hold it…hold it…(I love the suspense)…then throw again! I’ll drop the first ball from my mouth for you to pick up and before you know it I’m back on the bench and we can start over, how fun is that??!! Ball play and hanging out with all my friends are my most favorite things to do but I like other stuff too, I’m what they call a well-rounded guy. I enjoy sitting nicely in exchange for a treat, meeting other pups, coming when called for treats, playing with squeaky toys, having a treat and then going for a walk (got to take care of business!), sniffing around the park and snuffling your pocket for treats while snuggling on the bench. I also like treats. I’m always happy to share my things and never ‘guard’ them (whatever that means) and I’m told I have a ton of potential for learning new tricks, on account of the smarts and the treat liking and all. So, now you know pretty much everything about me, how about I get to know you? My schedule is wide open and I’m available for playdates any day of the week, hope to see you soon!

09/20/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE

Rawling walked nicely on leash, he was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, licked hands and face. He was excited during some of the handling items and was in constant movement between items, but had soft body language. He became easily over stimulated once the tag game began and would jump up on the assessor after each pass and was difficult to push off and was focused on the assessor and all other stimuli in the room; however his body remained neutral throughout. Rawling was stiff and cannot be pushed out of the food bowl, but did not growl, snap or bite. He was easy to handle when chewing on the toy and showed no interest in rawhide. Rawling was brought to the care center as a stray; upon intake, he was friendly, very energetic, and continually jumped up on people, showing no signs of aggression. Rawling had a soft body throughout the handling portion of the assessment but displayed a high level of energy and low threshold for over arousal. He also showed a slight potential to become possessive over food, stiffening and not lifting his head during the food test. The Behavior Department recommends Rawling go to an experienced home with no young children that is prepared to provide him adequate mental and physical stimulation as appropriate outlets for his energy and provide him with obedience lessens to work on his tendency to continually jump up on people. If there are older children in the home, an in-depth interaction should be conducted prior to adoption. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog becomes quickly over aroused upon the assessor’s quick movement, jumps on the assessor with open mouth, panting, body neutral, focused on assessor and all other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 3. Dog follows the dish, his tail between his legs, ears are forward. His body is stiff. Dog does not lift his head from the bowl when hand is applied to his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. No interest.

When off leash with other dogs, Rawling greets politely and engages in brief bouts of play, but is also sexually motivated. 9/20 update: Rawling greets politely, but shows sexually motivated behavior. 9/22 update: Rawling briefly attempts to solicit play. He is a bit anxious and may begin to pace and whine. 9/23 update: Rawling greets politely, attempts to solicit play and engages in brief bouts of running play. He may become anxious and begin to pace and whine when play stops. 9/24 update: Rawling is social and playful, engaging in running play with both males and females. He is vocal and can be pushy in his attempts to solicit play. He is tolerant of mounting. 9/25 update: Rawling engages in brief bouts of play when solicited. 9/26 update: Rawling continues to engage in brief bouts of play when solicited.
