03/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes (as told by Quino): Hiiiiiiiiiiii everyone, I’m Quino. Like you, I have no idea what my new name means, but if you call me I’ll be there! I’m on the small side, my coat is glossy and clean, my weight is perfect for my size, and I have lots of playful energy. I was sooooooooooooo happy when my new friend named Volunteer (that’s the name on her shirt and badge), leashed me as I needed to go potty so did that as soon as we were outside. Off to the park, and I walk pretty well on the leash even if I do say so myself. I was feeling so good I got a case of the zoomies on leash as it just felt so good to stretch my legs. Volunteer laughed and said we were going to the backyard where I could do some zoomies off leash. On the way back to the shelter we met a small poodle, and another medium sized dog and I said hello politely and kept walking. I know my manners! Off leash in the yard I got my zoomies on, and had so much fun running around the pen and chasing a ball. I stopped from time to time when Volunteer had a treat in her hand and asked me to sit……I like treats and take them gently :). There were some dogs playing in an adjoining pen and I play bowed to them as I love other dogs. I got my chance to play later, and I love to play. They called my play style “rough and rowdy”, but hey, it was my first time out. I would love a home with a canine sibling or two, as it’s really fun to have others of my own kind to play with. I’m ready for an active home with doggie brothers and/or sisters, so come meet me today. I’ll be waiting for you!
03/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Quino pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Quino was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Quino was not interested in toys but took the rawhide away with a soft body language. Quino is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experience home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide. Dog-dog: With other dogs off-leash, Quino was tolerant and generally gets along with all other dogs.
