A volunteer writes: If I had a dollar for every staff person who identified Quartz as her ‘boyfriend’, I’d have ended my day with a pot of money! Quartz has that “it” factor, that something something that makes him stand out in a crowd. Yes, he’s movie star stunning, but it’s the gentle personality, coupled with a quietly fun loving silly way about him that wins hearts and minds. He’s developed quite the fan club already, and now that I’ve spent some time with him, I’m going to lay my claim on him too – “He’s MY boyfriend!”. Quartz plays with a toy, pawing at it first before picking it up in his mouth…so cute to watch. He’s then all about snuggles, happy to lie down in an available lap, snuggle in close and give kisses. Give him a chance to cuddle and he’s there! Any time is lap time as far as he’s concerned. In play group he greets others well, play bows from time to time, responds to correction if needed and is playful and bouncy. Clearly well taken care of before joining us as a stray, he’s well socialized with both people and other dogs, and is a total joy to be with. He poses for pictures, takes treats gently, and is thrilled with attention paid in his silly, funny, loving way. I envy the person who gets to call out, “He’s MY boyfriend, forever and ever!” Who’s it going to be?
08/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Quartz walks nicely on leash and was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. He was calm and relaxed during handling but will mouth the leash if let hanging within his reach. He was calm and relaxed when playing tag with assessor but mouths the leash. Quartz did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was easy to handle chewing on his toy and had minimal interest in the rawhide. Quartz was brought to the care center as a stray. Since his arrival he has remained friendly toward staff and did well during off leash, social time with other dogs. Throughout the assessment, Quartz remained friendly towards the assessor but would occasionally mouth the assessor with little to no pressure applied and mouth the leash. The Behavior Department feels Quartz can go to an average home but may benefit from basic obedience training if his leash mouthing continues outside of the shelter environment (it should be noted that he did not mouth the leash on his relief walk). Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, mouths the leash. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Rawhide: 1. Minimal interest in rawhide, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Dog-Dog: When off leash with other dogs, Quartz greets politely. He is initially a bit sexually motivated, but responds well to correction from the other dog. Quartz continues to show interest and eventually play bows, and becomes playful and bouncy.
