04/23/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When I first saw Puma he was one of those dogs I had to meet–an older guy who went from family life to a cage and was still in good spirits–wiggling around, wagging his tail, making soft eye contact, and uttering charming demand barks. I didn’t know him when he was younger, but clearly I was looking at a dog that just keeps getting better with age! Outside, he exceeded my expectations. Puma is meaty, but easy to handle. He seems very housebroken and is treat-motivated (he takes them like a gentleman, too). When I ask him to “sit” he does so and then, unprompted, extends his paw. I crouch down to shake his right, then left, then right again, and when I stand up he rolls on his back! He loves belly rubs, but also seems to find joy in just being belly up. On subsequent walks he has demonstrated that you’re never too old to roll around in the dirt like a bird taking a dust bath and has even rolled over on his bed as soon as I approach his cage. He is very affectionate, well-mannered, and just has a wonderful way about him. Needless to say, the dog I had to meet quickly became a dog I have to take out whenever I am at Brooklyn ACC….please come see for yourself how special he is!
04/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Puma lived previously lived with adults and one 4 year old, and the owners stated he is usually gentle with everyone, but previously he has been barking at the family members. Puma also coexisted with two pups, and it was noted that he doesn’t play, and owner stated that when the pups annoy him, he will bark and snap at them. It was mentioned that Puma does not guard his food, toys, or treats from the family, but will guard his bones from the puppies .Puma was said has a medium activity level and the owners described him as affectionate and friendly. At intake it was noted that Puma gently approached the Admissions Counselor with loose body and tail wag. He was attention seeking, and allowed all handling. During SAFER Puma was sociable towards the assessor and was very attention seeking. He allowed all handling without issue, and was a bit distracted during the tag interaction. Puma did show some concerns during the food item; stiffening and did not lift his head from the food bowl, so an experienced home with not children is recommended. He was not interested in the toy items, and was easy to handle when engaged with the rawhide item. Puma has also shown some concerns when interacting with other dogs off leash, so a home with no other dogs is also recommended. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft and a bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are back. Food: 4. Dog freezes Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Puma ignores a female when at the gate but as soon as the gate opens he rushes in and pins her against the fence and attempts to bite.
04/01/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
