11/24/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/24/15 12:55 BASIC INFO Blue A1058823, Precious A1058824, and Bandito A1058825 are a family of APBT/Am Staff mixes. They were surrendered together with a cat A1058826 Mia because their family was evicted. Their family got Blue from a previous owner 4 years ago. Precious was born at home 2 years ago; Blue is her father and her mother belonged to her family as well. Blue and Precious had Bandit 1 year ago. Precious is spayed. SOCIALIZATION Precious is friendly/outgoing with strangers. She lived with 2 children currently 13 and 17 years old and spent time with younger children. She’s relaxed and playful with children. She plays somewhat rough with people sometimes due to her size and energy level. She’s relaxed, playful, and plays somewhat rough with the other dogs and the cat in her home. She’s never bitten any people or animals. BEHAVIOR Precious barks during storms and when someone is at the door. She doesn’t mind when her family members take food, treats, or toys from her, but her family thinks she may growl or snap at strangers who try this. Precious is anxious while held/restrained and bathed. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Precious’s family describes her as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, and very high energy. She follows her family around and like balls, chew toys, and bones. She plays tug and chase and wrestles. She lived inside and slept with her owners or on a blanket. She ate dry and wet Pedigree food three times daily. She’s well-behaved while home alone. Precious potties outside when she’s walked, but has not been walked regularly, so they often potties inside. She prefers to potty on grass or dirt. Precious pulls on her leash. INTAKE Precious had a loose, wiggly body, wagging tail, and open mouth during intake and handling-scan (-), collar, petting, switching leashes, positioning for pictures, and putting in a kennel. She took treats gently. She was tense and had a low body during her medical exam but was tolerant. She went into her kennel when asked.
11/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Precious is with us as her owners were evicted. She came with an adorable cat, Mia, 4 year old Blue, her father and mate and their son, Bandito. Food must have been scarce as Precious is rather thin, her nails are pretty long as we know that she was not taken out very much. Her mother, not part of the package, might have been a Boxer. Just look at Precious’ face, body and markings… and you will see what I see. Precious also lived with older children and comes, like her 2 housemates, with excellent recommendations. She was all wiggly when she arrived at the care center. An outing, meeting new people, a treat. When Precious realized that her world had vanished and replaced by 4 walls, unknown people, dogs, smells and noises, she withdrew to the back of her kennel and refused to come out. Getting her out is not an easy task although she is not growling a bit or showing teeth and just trying to hide behind her bed. She is so lost. Playgroup time: she is standing there, not knowing what to do with herself, wary of what those strange pooches could do to her. No, she does not want any of it. Nor does she want at first my treats although she ate the food in her den. She needs to gain weight big time! Free in a pen, it takes her a while to bond with me. She eventually settles for some caresses by my feet, looking at me with her beautiful and sad “North Sea” color eyes. I hope that Precious will find her bearing. I ache too, to see her having such a hard time and hope that someone will fall in love with her as I did… and take her home as a most cherished forever best friend. Precious is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of her new life with you. A volunteer updates: I am always happy to see Precious but even more so yesterday when she welcomed me warmly with a wagging tail and a wiggly body. What a great trooper, what a valiant gal she is!! She seemed to have forgotten all about her fears. Precious was out her den in no time, strolling by my side and if it was not for her cold, she would be running a marathon around the block. Her appetite returned and even a desire to play ball. She wanted to cuddle, jumped on my lap and showered me with kisses. We had such a sweet and wonderful time together. I wish every body around would see the transformation and come meet this lovely gal. Precious will need you pretty soon… so… think about her, ask to see her and may be you will leave with her as your most beloved pet.
11/30/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Precious came into our center along with three other dogs and a cat as an owner surrender. It is reported Precious also lived with children ages 13 and 17 and spent time with younger children as well, relaxed and playful with them. Owner describes her as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, and high energy. During intake, she had loose, wiggly body and wagging tail, allowing all handling. She was tense with low body during her initial medical exam, but was tolerant. Precious pulled on leash for her relief walk. It is reported she was born at home and not walked regularly so she may need some leash training. Precious walked nicely on her relief walk, no pulling. She was nervous upon entering SAFER assessment room, tail tucked, but would also wag her tail in tucked position intermittently. Precious allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail tucked. She stood trembling but accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, tail tucked. Precious followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, tail low wagging. She whined while positioning for Squeeze item. Precious did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times before turning away. When off leash with other dogs, Precious readily approaches the gate to greet, but will walk away once introduced. She roams the pen with her tail tucked seeking exit. The Behavior Team feels Precious would do well with an Experienced adopter. Due to her limited socialization, she may do best initially from a slow introduction and a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect in her new home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, tail tucked. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail tucked, mouth closed, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Precious readily approaches the gate to greet, but will walk away once introduced. She roams the pen with her tail tucked seeking exit.
11/25/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Precious has displayed nervous behavior while in the yard during off leash interaction Precious’s former owner repots that she is “relaxed, playful, and plays somewhat rough” with the dogs in her previous home. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Precious before placement into a home with another dog. When off leash with other dogs, Precious is nervous. She allows greeting, then wanders away to explore the yard. 11/27 update: Precious readily approaches the gate to greet, but will walk away once introduced. She roams the pen with her tail tucked seeking exit.
