05/21/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Cute little Precious would love to live up to her name, to be cherished and adored and hold a special place in someone’s heart, but right now she’s having a hard time putting her best paw forward. In pain from an ear infection, and surrounded by strange noises and smells, she prefers to curl up at the back of her den and try to ignore this frightening new world…perhaps if she closes her eyes really tight, when she wakes up she’ll be home again? Sorry Precious, that’s not how it works, but we can still go for a nice walk together… I leash and lift her with ease and she strolls at a good pace and immediately (and frequently) crouches to take care of her business before sniffing her way down the hall, those big eyes checking out all the other dogs and people but her mind clearly focused on just one goal — freedom! Precious takes the stairs with ease and while she mostly prefers to stay independent and trot around exploring, she does seek out attention in her own quiet way, approaching to brush past my back or sniff an outstretched hand. I can lure her in close (almost on my lap!) with tasty liver treats and then pet her all over, though she’s sensitive around her ears and lets me know I should stick to just the body massage by giving a little head flip. I like a dog who clearly communicates her needs, and sweet Precious asks for so little: a warm bed (she loves to nestle), a gentle hand and plenty of food are top of her wish list, and I hope that with your help she’ll soon be living the good life she deserves. Eight years young and with so much love still to give, Precious is a hidden treasure just waiting to be discovered…
05/19/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Precious walks calmly on leash. She was not sociable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Precious was shy and nervous and trembled during handling, with a fearful body language. She was uncomfortable with handling, growling and turning quickly toward the hand during the squeeze item. Precious growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test. She was not interested in toys or rawhide. Precious does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. The behavior department feels that she would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog freezes and tries to bite. Food 5. Dog tries to bite. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits. Helper:1036558
