A volunteer writes: Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, Proda is one of the larger breeds, a Mastiff. Brindle in color, always does her business when I walk her, “Yeah Proda”, she knows “Sit”, but because she very excitable, she has to be coaxed some to do it. The rest of my words about Proda came forth in a letter I wrote to a friend last night. And, in my mind, should be share cause it’s a tell all about this beautiful animal.I’m a pretty strong fella, but so is Proda … We walked, she pulled, we walked, she pulled and pulled. Midway into the walk, I stopped her, and firmly commanded her attention “Now listen you good doggie, you’re going to learn to walk by my side, like all wonderful doggies should do!” About 50 feet from out entry to the parking lot, she slowed to my human pace … I praised her, and I took her to the fenced in yard, so she could walk at her own unique pace, off leash. “Exercise they all need it.” I called her to me, she came, stood and looked at me, then out came her massive tongue gaving me the biggest doggie kiss I’ve ever gotten … “I love it!”. She then proceeded to flip on her side, then on her back and the rest is history … For the next 5 minutes it was belly rubs all the way!
That’s how it is with big, small, and in the middle weight doggies. With love and as much attention as you can give, a good firm authoritative teacher, all her bad habits can be curbed, I’m sure of that from my own experiences with other dogs. Wont you please come into our Brooklyn Care Center today, and meet with Proda, you can be the one to have her trust enough so she’ll roll on her belly, just for you, to give all those wonderful belly rubs. You can be the one to receive that great big doggie kiss … For me, it’s just a little slice of Heaven on Earth. Adoption is a miraculous happening, you’re saving a life, giving a forgotten animal a place they truly can call their home. So please don’t hesitate another moment, come in and meet with Proda, so she can come home with you today, become the family pet and your life long companion. Adoption is a blessing … Wont you open up your heart today … You can make that difference … Do it and find out!

Prada came in as a stray surrender so her past behavior in a home is unknown. At intake Prada was reported to be very loose and allowed all handling. She was also reported to be enthusiastic on leash and insistent but responsive to guidance. During SAFER Prada was relaxed, but sociable towards the assessor, remaining close and allowing all handling without issue. She became stiff during the food item and could not be pushed out of the food bowl. Prada also became stiff and bared her teeth when the assessor attempted to remove the rawhide item, and she showed no interest in the toys.

Jenny pulls a bit on the leash during her relief walk. She was shy and nervous and trembled during handling, but had soft body language. She was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction and needed coaxing to regain attention back to the assessor. Jenny did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. During the toy item she showed minimal interest sniffing and smelling then walking away. Jenny put her body between assessor and rawhide, showing no growling but became a bit stiff and tried to exit the room when attempting to remove the rawhide.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip licks.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needed coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish’s movement. Dog’s body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. She lifts her head when hand is pushed against his cheek.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell and lick, then turns away.
Rawhide: 3. Dog takes rawhide away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is stiff.
Dog-to-dog: off leash she is a polite greeter with males and females, doesn’t correct dogs, avoids dogs after greeting
