A volunteer writes: A stocky, blockhead lowrider…my favorite! Add in: good leash manners, likely housetrained, soft tail waggy energy, affectionate, playful, good in group a social, “gentle/dainty” player, sits when asked, takes treats gently wagging his tail in a gracious thank you, and he SNORTS when he snuggles….well…………..
Portland’s foster writes:
Portland is a very cute, sweet, playful, and loving dog. He is very friendly to everyone! He is crate-trained, can stay at home alone, rarely barks, and has fantastic leash manners. He loves to play with toys (but does not destroy them) and knows the command sit. He LOVES LOVES LOVES being pet and getting scritches all over! He does not seem 100% housetrained but with clever use of the crate, I haven’t had any accidents in the last few days. Inside the crate, he lasts for many hours and with proper training I am sure he will be perfectly housetrained in no time (he also goes right after getting out – very convenient for frequent pee breaks). Portland is a bit scared of certain things 1) steps (especially going down steps (although once he knows an area with not-too-many steps he goes down fine)), 2) long walks (Portland loves short walks but after a while he does not want to go any further in which case he just lays down and strikes), and 3) some objects on the street (like black trash bags). Overall, he is a fantastic dog!!!

BEHAVIOR:
Portland walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Portland had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Portland was easy to handle when chewing on toys and took the rawhide away with a soft body language.
Portland did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Food: 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away
Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.
Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide.
GROUP BEHAVIOR:
When off leash with other dogs, Portland greets politely and engages in brief bouts of running play.
9/30 update: Portland is social and playful, engaging in vocal running play with both males and females. He will offer correction for pushy play.
10/1 update: Portland engages in rough play with both males and females. He will offer vocalizations in attempts to solicit play.
