05/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Poochi previously lived with 2 adults. He was reported to be housebroken and well behaved when left home alone. It was noted that Poochi’s family did not touch his food, toys or treats when he is engaged and they have not bathed him or trimmed his nails so they cannot report on this behavior. Upon intake it was noted that Poochi was quiet, still and whale eyed for introduction, and became uncomfortable when approached from above. Poochi was reported to walk well on leash and was responsive to guidance but can be defensive towards strangers. During SAFER Poochi was sociable towards the assessor, and muzzle nudged the assessors hands to solicit petting. He was relaxed for most handling, but became stiff and uncomfortable for the paw handling item. Poochi did display some concerns during the resource items; stiffening and growling when the food and rawhides were removed, and he snapped at the assess-a-hand when the toy item was being taken away. Due to these concerns we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification to address this guarding behavior and can extensively counsel potential adopters before placement into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, and a bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog becomes stiff, and moves his legs so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Food: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Toy 1: 5. Dog attempts to bite Rawhide: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Poochi is polite and respectful in the yard with another dog and does not engage much beyond the initial greeting
