11/07/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If we could harness his energy we could power our cell phones for a week! All about being a super playful and high energy puppy, he’s absolutely gorgeous in his light tan coat, wagging tail and big smile. He showed off his housetraining skills the moment we were out the door, has nice leash manners, checks up while we walk and will from time to time jump up for attention. Surrendered by his person we’re told that his favorite toy is a toy rubber tire, and that he’s playful and energetic. Yes he is! He loved playing with a plush toy, amusing himself tossing it around. Showing off his ‘sit’, he takes a treat gently and has such a cute “I’m proud of myself” smile you just want to melt with the cuteness of it all. In group play he briefly solicits play but then goes off on his own to do this own thing. It was time for his behavior assessment so I took him into the room where he proceeded to snuggle with the team, give lots of kisses, and then lie down to rest as he was pooped! Poncho is looking for a very active family as he needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation. He’s adorably energetic, can be a bit mouthy in play and needs structure and positive reinforcement training to be all that he can be. Couch potatoes need not apply for this energizer bunny…..but if you need a hiking, jogging, long walk buddy, Poncho is waiting to meet you.
11/06/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Poncho pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment (mouthy light). Sam was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Poncho was excitable but playful while playing tag jumping up on the assessor and grab at the leash at the end of the game but was not difficult to distract him. Poncho took the toy away but had soft body language. Poncho was surrender to us. According to his previous owner Poncho has tons of energy and wants to play. His favorite toy is a rubber tire that he loves to chew on and give to his owner to play with. The owner stated that He has no show any sign of resources guarding”. Poncho appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. Poncho is quick to use his mouth in play and has poor body awareness, resulting in him mouthing handlers with light pressure. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Grab at the leash at the end of the game but was not difficult to distract him. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy When off leash with other dogs Poncho is anxious, barking and pacing in the yard. He will briefly solicit play but cannot easily focus. He will then resume pacing and barking, ignoring the helper dog. 11/5 update: Poncho continues to be anxious. He does not acknowledge the other dog and will only pace the yard barking.
