04/20/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If it’s true that eyes are the windows to the soul, then Pom Pom’s lustrous golden eyes reflect the beauty that resides within. Graced with an elegantly chiseled face and captivating eyes, Pom Pom was found underweight and with wounds that are being cared for by the wonderful staff at the Care Center. Understandably she’s hungry at the moment, being quick to take treats offered to her; but Pom Pom appeared to have been cared for at one point as she went potty once outside and sat for treats – when given a little bit of time. Whatever her past, she meets other dogs peacefully and walks nicely on leash. And she has a playful side, a glimpse offered when she was momentarily intrigued with a stuffed toy. What she needs now is a hero, someone who can help and provide the care she might need. Can that be you? Another volunteer writes: Pom Pom is a skinny little thing, but very sweet. She walked very well and respond to me. She also happens to be curb trained. She was eager to give me and recieve affection during our walk. Pom Pom has a calm demeanor to her and is perfect for the laid back person with the same demeanor.
04/06/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pom Pom came to our center when a good Samaritan found her tied to a pole and no one ever came back to retrieve her. She arrived emaciated and foraging for food. She walks nicely on leash, slightly pulling on her relief walk. Pom Pom did not settle for the Look portion of her SAFER assessment, not comfortable with being held under her face. She allowed touch for Sensitivity and for Squeeze, but moved her body away from the Assessor each time. She was focused on other stimuli in the room, mainly finding food. During the Food item, she gulped the food faster when it was being taken away, and her cheeks were able to be lifted out of the bowl but only after alot of pressure. She showed minimal interest in both toys that were offered. She also showed minimal interest in rawhide., but once back in her kennel, Pom Pom enthusiastically ate the rawhide. Pom Pom approached the helper dog calmly and wagged her tail. Due to her potential guarding behaviors based around food due to her emaciated condition, the Behavior Team feels Pom Pom would do best in an Experienced Home without young children, and any older children meet for an in-depth interaction beforehand. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and moves body away from the Assessor and focuses on other stimuli. Her body is soft. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog moves body away but does not pull back paw at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Food 3. Dog gulps food, begins to eat faster and with bigger bites, body stiff. She lifts head when hand is applied to cheek with a lot of pressure. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Rawhide 1. Minimal interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
04/14/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Pom Pom is polite and will greet other dogs, but is uninterested in engaging further. She does not play and will mostly keep to herself. 4/17 update: Pom Pom has become more playful and is very tolerant with pushier dogs.
