Polo (A1015415) is a 2yr old neutered male AMPBT who was adopted from us 7months ago and is being surrendered due to his owner having no time for him. Polo’s last vet visit was in january and and has no health problems/injuries. Polo is friendly/outgoing with strangers. Polo has spent time with a young child who he played exhuberantly & somewhat rough with at times due to his strength & size would knock the child down during play. Polo plays gentle, exhuberantly and somewhat rought at times with adults. When Polo sees Dogs on the street he hard barks, lunges at them and growls. He’s friends with a Chihuhua Mix who belongs to the owners’ parent and they’re playful and loving. Polo hasn’t been around Cats. Polo has no bitten/scratched anyone. During loud noises Polo is very alert and will bark. Polo is friendly & enjoys bathtime. When someone grabs his toy(s) he thinks it’s play time he loves to play “tug” with his toy(s). He isn’t bothered by the following: having his treats taken away/moved, being pushed/moved off of furniture, being held/restrained, or being brushed. His behavior is unknown during his nails being trimmed or if he’s disturbed while resting/sleeping. If someone unfamiliar knocks on the door or enters the home Polo will bark. Do not disturb Polo or attempt to touch/move his food/food bowl while eating, he will growl, bark and snap at your hand (no bites have occured in the home). Polo is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, pushy, mellow (at times), excitable & independent. His activity level is described as very high. The owners’ favorite thing about Polo is how he gives paw/shakes hands with you. Polo’s favorite activity is tug of war. When the owner is home Polo follows them around. Polo enjoys kongs (he tears them up). Polo is kept mostly indoors. Polo sleeps in a crate (with the door opened). Polo eats Eukanuba dry food 3x a day. His favorite treats are Blue Diamond salmon treats. Polo is very house trained and only had accidents in the home the first few weeks when first adopted. Polo is kept in a crate for up to 6hrs. Polo’s known commands are “sit”, “stay”, & “shake/give paw”. Polo is walked 5-6x a day for about 30mins & he pulls very hard on the leash. Polo was very friendly. He was seeking attention/affection from the admissions counselors and sat nicely for treats and took them gently. Polo sat nicely for pictures, allowed us to scan (pos.) & collar him.
10/02/2014 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Likely named after the musician from Argentina, our CharliGarcia is an intriguing pup. Handsome and polite, he sits quietly near the kennel door, patiently awaiting his turn for a walk. Once outside, he responds to the new smells and sounds of his environment by being a bit scattered on leash, moving to and fro to investigate the neighborhood. But he’s a good pup who moves on after a few sniffs, and every so often will stride along a stretch of the path with a jaunty bounce to his step. And it turns out that our CharliGarcia is a well trained pup, not only adjusting to the leash but responding promptly when asked to “sit” and “give paw”. He also may be house-trained as he takes care of “business” on his way to the park. He likes treats, which he takes gently from my hand. CharliGarcia is the kind of pup that naturally activates your “I would like to get to know you better” inclination! And his fine coat and nice manners only add to that thought. What CharliGarcia needs now is a new “leash” on life – someone who can bring a little music back into his world!
05/21/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Polo pulls hard on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Polo was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He growled and bit the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test. Polo took the toy and rawhide away with a stiff body language. He approaches the helper dog with his body not stiff, ears relaxed and lip long. Polo was surrendered to us. According to his previous owner Polo is friendly and outgoing with strangers. Polo has spent time with a young child who he played exuberantly and somewhat rough with at times due to his strength and size would knock the child down during play. Polo plays gentle, exuberantly and somewhat rough at times with adults. When Polo sees Dogs on the street he hard barks, lunges at them and growls. He’s friends with a Chihuahua Mix who belongs to the owners’ parent and they’re playful and loving. The owner stated that do not disturb Polo or attempt to touch/move his food/food bowl while eating, he will growl, bark and snap at your hand”. Polo show some guarding issues during the resources test. He may require positive reinforcement behavior modification to address this food guarding behavior. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home.
