12/30/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Polo is one handsome lad, healthy looking and clad in a perfect silvery coat. He has eyes to match and ears that play with every sound heard. I love his pout and his begging face. Indeed, he loves attention, caresses and treats. He is such a great “sitter” but jumps and dances for roastbeef . His tail wags non stop. He might be 3 year old but does act very puppy like in play, gently mouthing and even silly. Polo pulled on the leash with me but walked quite well with another male volunteer, marking his territory and saluting other pooches on the way. He does not chase pigeons or squirrels. He is a little shy in playgroup with other dogs. Polo has been beautifully cared for but was left with us as his short time owner had no time for him anymore. We always talk about females being mated but our Polo just fathered a litter of 12 puppies… and then …let go. He is known to be good with children, strangers and other dogs. He seems to have lived and got along with many of his peers. Polo is a very good looking young man, sociable and very friendly we have him at the Manhattan Care Center. Like any dog who has been someone else’s, he will need some training to adjust to his new life as your forever best friend. Polo is so worth the effort. Please, do come and meet him soon. Another volunteer writes: Polo is a big sweetie. When I walked him, he had stopped often for pets and kisses. He’s a cuddle bug. He also is most likely house-trained as he relieved himself as soon as we exit the building. I had a hard time returning this little sweetie to his cage. I’m sure Polo wanted to continue snuggling with me, rather than return to his cage, and I wanted to continue snuggling as well. Polo is a keeper, so hurry to ACC and snatch Polo up for yourself. You will love the big wet kisses he gives.
12/27/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Polo was brought into our center as an owner surrender citing no time for him. Owner reports he has lived with other dogs and gets along well with children and strangers. Polo pulled on leash during his relief walk. He was affectionate to both assessor and assistant upon entering the SAFER assessment room, charging/jumping up to lick faces, unaware of his strength and size. Polo allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft, tail wagging. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, tail wagging. He was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, body soft, approaching assessor at end of game. Polo did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licking assessor’s hand. He showed minimal interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs, Polo is nervous and initially keeps to himself. Eventually he shows brief interest in approaching and sniffing. The Behavior Team feels Polo would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners as well as body awareness in regards to jumping up. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth, tail wag. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull paw back, licks hand. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Polo is nervous and initially keeps to himself. Eventually he shows brief interest in approaching and sniffing.
12/23/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Polo greets other dogs exhibiting submissive behaviors–licking the helper dogs lips, rolling over to show his stomach, etc to both males and females. During his time here he has become more confident, engaging in brief play when solicited by the helper dog. His owner reports that he does well with dogs that he sees but his behaviors in home are unknown. Based on this information the behavior department recommends that Polo be allowed time to acclimate to his surroundings before being introduced to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Polo displays submissive behaviors during greeting, then walks away from the helper dog to seek handler attention. 12/24: Polo is nervous and initially keeps to himself. Eventually he shows brief interest in approaching and sniffing. 12/29 update: Polo is initially a bit nervous but opens up and begins to solicit a bit with a playful female. He greets and interacts with a male well.
