05/25/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Piselli… I do not understand. May be the “name giver” was referring to her glittery and eloquent dark eyes, two peas in a pod? Piselli is one of the most feminine dogs I have ever met… a real girly girl, a charmer, a very attractive slim damsel who is ready to steal your heart. She is shy and submissive, a bit skittish, rolls quickly on her side then on her back for belly rubs. A coquette, a flirt… I do not think so. I think she is just quite timid. She trots like a little horse, so elegantly and settles like an I, a beautiful statue for picture taking. Piselli comes to life when she sees other dogs. She is curious, wants to meet them. She is dancing back and forth. She climbs on the bench, makes herself taller and stands on her limbs to see them better. Her tail comes out from under her belly, wags and then she withdraws, quickly. A little playgroup time would do her good, I think. Piselli is very friendly and is quick to put an engaging smile on her face. She comes immediately when called, hops on the bench next to me and collapses under caresses. She is very affectionate and just needs to feel secure to come out of her shell and show how loving she is. I really fell under her spell and I hope that you will too. Piselli is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting and dreaming to be your little princess.
05/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
+Piselli was walks calmly on leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Piselli had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. She was not interested in food or rawhide. Piselli took the toy away but had soft body language. Piselli during her initial SAFER she was fearful and uncomfortable with handling. She also froze and growled over food. However, she appears to be acclimating very well to the shelter and to her caretakers; through subsequent staff and volunteer interactions Piselli has become more relaxed and willing to interact. Based on this improvement we have re-SAFERed and found Piselli to be still a bit shy but overall social. No concerns were seen on this reSAFER. However, due to her possessive behavior over the food bowl in the previous SAFER we suggest that potential adopters be comfortable with safely managing food guarding behavior in case it manifests in a home environment. Based upon this notable improvement we feel that she is likely appropriate for a home with or without children, provided she is given the time to warm up to her new family at her own pace. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Food 1. No interest. Toy 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Rawhide 1. No interest.
05/24/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Piselli is very nervous and interacts with her tail tucked. She will bare teeth when the helper dog approaches to sniff her. She is selective, barking through gate at a female in an adjacent pen. 5/28 update: Piselli is nervous but will approach the gate and greet the helper dog with a low wagging tail. She greets but then walks away and keeps to herself. She will correct any further interactions.
